Alternator troubleshooting
Problem Possible causes Corrective actions
Alternator outputs 0 Volt Blown Fuse. Replace the fuse.
Absence of residual voltage. Excite thealternator by applying a 12-V battery
voltage with a series resistance of 30 Ω at the + and -
terminals of the electronic regulator, observing
the polarities..
The alternator continues producing 0V Broken connections. Check connection cables, measure winding
after having been excited. resistances and compare with values referred in the
alternator manual.
No-load low voltage. Maladjusted voltage potentiometer. Readjust the voltage.
Protection operation. Check the frequency/voltage regulator.
Failure in the connections. Check the connections.
No-load high voltage. Maladjusted voltage potentiometer. Readjust the voltage.
Damaged regulator. Replace the regulator.
Voltage lower than rated value when loaded. Maladjusted voltage potentiometer. Readjust voltage potentiometer.
Protection operation. Excessively high current, power factor lower than
0.8, speed lower than 10% of rated speed.
Damaged regulator. Replace the regulator.
Rectifier bridge failure. Check diodes, disconnect cables.
Voltage higher than rated value when loaded. Maladjusted voltage potentiometer. Readjust voltage potentiometer.
Damaged regulator. Replace the regulator.
Unstable voltage. Variable engine speed. Check rotation regularity.
Maladjusted regulator. Adjust regulator stability, acting on the control.
Potentiometer STABILITY.
