Overview

The Autowatch Ghost is a cutting-edge aftermarket CAN bus immobiliser designed to provide advanced vehicle security. Unlike traditional immobilisers that rely on standard key fob deactivation, the Ghost system uses existing dash and steering wheel control buttons to create a personalised PIN code sequence for deactivation. This innovative approach ensures a high level of security, as the deactivation method is not tied to the car key and remains invisible to even professional thieves, thereby mitigating the threat of car key theft. While other immobilisers and tracking systems can often be located or jammed, the Autowatch Ghost is designed to remain hidden and secure within the vehicle.

Function Description

The primary function of the Autowatch Ghost is to immobilise a vehicle, preventing it from being started or driven without the correct PIN code sequence. The system operates on the vehicle's CAN bus, integrating seamlessly with existing electronic controls.

PIN Code Immobilisation: The core security feature is the PIN code, a unique sequence of button presses chosen and programmed by the user. Without entering this sequence, the vehicle will not start or move. This method ensures that even if a thief gains access to the car keys, they cannot start the engine without knowing the specific PIN code.

Engine Stall/Isolation: For vehicles where the Ghost can stall the engine, it may be possible to start the engine before entering the PIN code. However, the vehicle will either be unable to move out of Park, the engine will stall if the gear selector is moved from Park, or the engine will stall if the vehicle moves backwards or forwards. In "Starter isolate" mode, the vehicle will not crank the engine to start until the PIN code is entered. In "Engine stall" mode, the engine will start but will stall if the PIN code is not entered and the gear selector is moved from Park. In "Gearbox lock" mode, the engine will start, but the gear selector will remain recessed or locked until the PIN code is entered.

Automatic Re-arming: The Autowatch Ghost automatically returns to the armed state after 3 seconds when the vehicle's ignition is switched off. For VAG vehicles, this re-arming occurs after 30 seconds. There is no external indication when this automatic re-arming happens, maintaining the system's stealth.

Indication Signal: To avoid providing clues to thieves, the Ghost deliberately does not use a dash-mounted flashing LED. Instead, it utilises a model-specific dash warning light (most commonly the left or right indicator signal or the check-engine warning signal) to confirm deactivation and for programming various features. This serves as a substitute for an external Status LED.

iPhone Application Connectivity: The Autowatch Ghost can connect to a unique iPhone application via Bluetooth Low Energy. When connected, users can drive away without entering the PIN code. The communication between the iPhone and Ghost is encrypted, and each unit has a unique code, preventing unauthorised copying or control. The application is compatible with iPhone 4s and newer, running iOS version 7.1 onwards.

Usage Features

Entering Your PIN Code:

  1. Switch on the vehicle's ignition.
  2. Press each button in the PIN code sequence firmly and deliberately, in the correct order.
  3. Wait until the indication signal flashes twice before starting the vehicle. On most vehicles, it is not necessary to wait for the double flash before starting, and users can practice to disarm the system quickly.

Changing Your PIN Code (User PIN Code Change Procedure):

  1. Switch on the vehicle's ignition.
  2. Enter your current PIN code (do NOT start the engine).
  3. Press and hold the accelerator pedal to the floor.
  4. Enter your current PIN code again.
  5. The Autowatch Ghost will enter "learn mode," indicated by the signal flashing every 3 seconds. You can then release the accelerator pedal.
  6. Do not switch the ignition off before setting the new PIN code.
  7. To set the new PIN: Enter your new PIN code, wait for 3 flashes of the indication signal, then enter the same new PIN code again, and wait 2 seconds. If successful, the indication signal will flash twice. If unsuccessful, it will flash 4 times, and you can attempt to learn the new PIN again.

Emergency Code Entry (if PIN is forgotten or a button is not working):

  1. Locate your 4-digit emergency code on your Autowatch Ghost card (behind the scratch-off security protection) or contact Autowatch.
  2. Switch on your vehicle's ignition.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  4. Press and release the accelerator pedal repeatedly according to the first digit of the emergency code.
  5. Release the brake pedal.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 for the remaining 3 digits of the emergency code.
  7. The Ghost will enter "learn mode," indicated by the signal flashing every 3 seconds.
  8. Do not switch the ignition off before setting the new PIN code.

Service / Valet Mode: This mode allows the vehicle to be serviced or valet parked without requiring the PIN code to be entered.

  • To Enter: Enter your PIN code as normal. Once the indication signal flashes twice, press the service button 5 times. The indication signal will flash 5 times to confirm entry into service/valet mode.
  • Automatic Exit: This mode is not permanent and will automatically exit if the vehicle exceeds 30 mph for a continuous period of 3 minutes. After this, the Ghost will require a PIN code to disarm on the next start attempt.
  • Manual Exit: Enter your PIN code at any time while the ignition is switched on.

iPhone Application Usage:

  • Pairing: Install the Autowatch Ghost app from the iTunes app store. Open the app and follow the in-app instructions to create a pairing.
  • Removing a Pairing (Mutual Removal): This is the preferred method. Be in range and connected to the vehicle. Select the "remove pairing" option in the Autowatch Ghost app. Both the iPhone and Ghost will then be free to create a new pairing.
  • Removing a Pairing (Forced Removal): Use this if the iPhone or vehicle is unavailable for mutual removal.
    • In-app forced removal: Follow the instructions in the app to remove the Autowatch Ghost from the iPhone.
    • In-vehicle forced removal: Re-learn your current PIN code by following the PIN change procedure and simply re-entering your current PIN code. The indications will flash rapidly at the end of the procedure to confirm the iPhone pairing has been removed. Your PIN code will not change in this process.

Maintenance Features

PIN Code Considerations:

  • Users need to know which specific vehicle buttons can be used for the PIN code. This information should be obtained from the installer or Autowatch UK.
  • During the learn procedure, each button press in the PIN code must be no more than 2 seconds apart.
  • Each press is confirmed by a single flash of the Signal Indicator.
  • The PIN code must be between 4 and 20 button presses long.
  • All buttons can be repeated, with exceptions pointed out by the installer or sales assistant.
  • The service button cannot be used more than 4 times in a row in the PIN code.
  • For security, users are advised not to write down their PIN code or share it with anyone not authorised to drive the vehicle. It is recommended to plan the PIN code before starting the learn process to avoid hesitation.

System Configuration: All vehicles have different programmable options, and it is important to understand how the Ghost system has been programmed for a specific model. Users should establish the available immobilisation types (starter isolate, engine stall, gearbox lock) and which option is currently active for their vehicle.

The Autowatch Ghost is designed for long-term, reliable operation with minimal user maintenance beyond understanding and correctly using its security features. The system's hidden nature and reliance on existing vehicle controls contribute to its low-maintenance profile.
