Domain Name Server
You can use the Domain Name Server (DNS) client to ping or Telnet to a host server or to a host by
name.
To use this feature, you must configure at least one DNS. You can also configure a default domain
name. If you configure a default domain name, that name is appended to host names that do not
contain a dot. The default domain name and addresses are saved in NVRAM.
The host names for ping and Telnet cannot be longer than 63 alphanumeric characters, and the
default DNS domain name cannot be longer than 255 characters.
You can also use the ping command to specify additional ping parameters, including the number of
ICMP packets to be sent, the packet size, the interval between packets, and the timeout. You can
also set the ping to continuous, or you can set a debug flag to obtain extra debug information.
Displaying the DNS domain name
Display the DNS domain name, as well as any configured servers.
Procedure
1. Log on to ACLI to enter User EXEC mode.
2. At the command prompt, enter the following command:
show ip dns

Pinging the host
You can test the network connection to another network device using the ping command. The
command sends an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packet from the switch to the target
device.
You can ping a host using either its IP address or hostname.
Before you begin
A local IP address must be set before issuing the ping command.
