Overview

The AVMATRIX VS0601U is a compact, metal-housed 6-channel SDI/HDMI multi-format video switcher designed for various event production applications. This device facilitates video switching, audio mixing, and a range of transition effects, making it a versatile tool for live streaming and presentations.

Function Description:

The VS0601U serves as a central hub for managing multiple video and audio sources. It accepts six input channels, comprising four SDI and two HDMI inputs, and automatically detects their formats. For output, it provides one USB Type-C output, two SDI and one HDMI PGM outputs, and one SDI and one HDMI multiview output. Additionally, there's an SDI AUX output that can be configured for either PGM or PVW. The device supports uncompressed capture for live streaming, adhering to UVC (USB video class) and UAC (USB audio class) standards, which means no additional drivers are required for operation with computers.

The core function of the switcher is to seamlessly transition between different video sources for both Program (PGM) and Preview (PVW) outputs. Users can select input sources for PGM and PVW independently using dedicated buttons on the front panel. The multiview output displays both PGM and PVW, along with all six input windows, providing a comprehensive overview of all available feeds and the current switching status. The PGM output can be scaled, ensuring compatibility with a wider range of equipment.

Audio mixing is another key capability of the VS0601U. It features one channel of 3.5mm stereo audio input/output and one channel of RCA (L/R) analog audio input/output, alongside four channels of SDI embedded audio. The device supports both audio mixing mode and Audio Follow Video (AFV) mode. In mixing mode, users can select audio sources for two channels from any of the six video inputs, phone, or RCA input. In AFV mode, the audio automatically follows the embedded audio of the Program video source, with volume control available via a master fader.

The switcher also includes a Picture-in-Picture (PIP) mode, allowing a small image to be displayed in the top left corner of the PVW window. The size, position, and border of the PIP window are adjustable through the menu settings.

Usage Features:

The VS0601U offers intuitive control through its front panel, featuring dedicated buttons for PGM and PVW channel selection, transition effects, and menu navigation.

  • PGM/PVW Switching: The front panel includes two rows of buttons, 1-6, corresponding to the six input windows displayed on the multiview. When a button is selected for PGM, its LED turns red, and for PVW, its LED turns green. The selected PGM source is indicated by a red border, and the selected PVW source by a green border on the multiview display.
  • Transition Control: The device provides two types of transition control:
    • Transition without Effects (CUT): This performs an immediate, simple switch between Preview and Program views without any delay or transition effects.
    • Transition with Effects (AUTO/T-Bar):
      • AUTO: Executes an automated switch between Preview and Program views, with the timing determined by a chosen speed setting. It utilizes the selected transition effect (WIPE, MIX, or FADE).
      • T-Bar: Allows for manual transitions, offering more flexibility as the timing depends on the speed of the user's manual movement.
  • Transition Effects:
    • MIX: Selects a basic A/B Dissolve effect for the next transition. The MIX button's LED illuminates when active.
    • FADE: Creates a gradual fade transition from one source to another. The FADE button's LED illuminates when active.
    • WIPE: Provides a transition where one source replaces another by wiping from different directions. There are eight WIPE selections available, and an "INV" button allows for an inverse wipe direction. The WIPE button's LED illuminates when active.
  • FTB (Fade to Black): This emergency feature fades the current Program video source to black. The FTB button flashes when active. Pressing it again reverses the action, returning to the currently selected Program video source, and the button stops flashing.
  • Audio Mixer: The MIXER button allows users to switch to audio mixing mode. The menu provides options to select audio sources for two channels from various inputs (IN1-IN6, Phone, RCA IN). The AFV button enables Audio Follow Video mode, where the audio automatically follows the embedded audio of the Program video source.
  • Menu Settings: A MENU button provides access to various settings, including SDI PGM/AUX and Multiview Output Format, Audio Setting (Mixing Mode, AFV Mode), PIP Mode adjustments, System Settings (language, real-time clock display), and Network Settings. The menu is navigated using a knob, which can be rotated to browse options and pressed to select.
  • USB3.0 Live Streaming: The USB3.0 Type-C output transmits the PGM as an uncompressed video and audio signal, compatible with UVC and UAC standards. This allows for easy streaming through a computer without the need for additional drivers. The device appears as "AVMATRIX USB Capture Video" and "AVMATRIX USB Capture Audio" in the Windows Device Manager, enabling use with third-party video media players and streaming software like OBS Studio, Skype, Zoom, YouTube Live, and others.

Maintenance Features:

The VS0601U is designed for reliable operation, but certain precautions and guidelines are provided to ensure its longevity and safe use.

  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes the importance of safe handling and operation. Users are advised to place the unit on a stable surface, operate it only on the specified supply voltage, and disconnect the power cord by the connector, not by pulling the cable. Regular checks for power cord wear or damage are recommended to prevent fire or electrical shock hazards.
  • Grounding: Proper grounding of the unit is crucial at all times to prevent electrical shock.
  • Environmental Considerations: The device should not be operated in hazardous or potentially explosive atmospheres, near water, or exposed to liquids, metal pieces, or other foreign materials entering the unit.
  • Transportation: When transporting the unit, users are advised to handle it with care to avoid shocks and to use the original packing materials or adequate alternative packing.
  • Servicing: Internal servicing or adjustment of the unit should only be performed by qualified personnel. Users are warned not to remove covers, panels, or access circuitry with power applied. The power should always be turned off, and the power cord disconnected before any such actions.
  • Troubleshooting: In case of abnormality or malfunction, the unit should be turned off, and everything disconnected before moving it. A specific troubleshooting tip is provided for the FTB function: if the PGM window displays black and remains black after a transition, check if the FTB button is flashing and press it again to stop the black display.
  • Firmware Updates: The LAN port is provided for updates, suggesting that the device's firmware can be updated to improve performance or add new features.
  • Network Configuration: The device supports both Dynamic and Static IP acquisition methods for network settings. Users can configure the NetMask and Gateway according to their network setup, with a default IP address provided for static configurations. A time control software is available from the AVMATRIX website to synchronize the device's clock with a PC.
  • GPIO for Tally: The inclusion of GPIO (General Purpose Input/Output) for Tally allows for integration with external Tally systems, providing visual cues to camera operators about which source is live (PGM) or in preview (PVW). This enhances coordination in multi-camera productions.
  • FTB for Emergency: The FTB function is specifically noted for emergency conditions, allowing for a quick fade to black if an issue arises during a live broadcast.

The VS0601U is designed with user convenience and operational safety in mind, offering a robust solution for managing and streaming multi-format video content.
