Overview

This document is an owner's manual and safety instructions for the Bauer 6.5A Orbital Jig Saw with Laser, model 1873E-B.

Function Description:

The Bauer 6.5A Orbital Jig Saw with Laser is a corded power tool designed for cutting various materials. It features a 6.5 Amp motor and an orbital cutting action, which allows the blade to move in a circular motion in addition to its vertical reciprocating motion. This orbital action can be adjusted to different settings ("I", "II", or "III") for faster cutting in softer workpieces, or turned off ("O") for straight cutting. A laser guide is integrated to assist with accurate cutting. The tool is equipped with a speed dial for adjusting the cutting speed from 1 (slow) to 6 (fast), making it suitable for different materials and tasks. It uses T-shank blades (sold separately) and includes a transparent guard for safety. A dust port is provided for connecting a dust collection system or bag, and a dust blower lever allows for opening or closing the dust port. The baseplate can be tilted from 0° to 45° to the right or left for angled cuts, and a rip fence can be installed for guiding straight cuts.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electrical Rating: 120VAC / 60Hz / 6.5A
  • Cutting Speed: 0-3000 SPM (Strokes Per Minute)
  • Stroke Length: 5/8"
  • Baseplate Tilt: 0-45° left or right
  • Blade Type: T-shank Blades (sold separately)
  • Laser: Class IIa Laser Product, Max. Output: 1 mW, Wavelength: 650 nm. Complies with 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11.

Usage Features:

  • Blade Installation: Blades are installed by opening the transparent guard, rotating and holding the blade clamp lever clockwise, inserting the T-shank blade with teeth pointing forward and the back against the guide wheel, then releasing the lever and closing the guard.
  • Adjusting Cutting Angle: The baseplate tilt can be adjusted by pulling out the Angle Adjustment Lever, tilting the baseplate to the desired angle (0° to 45° left or right), ensuring the pin engages the baseplate teeth, and then pressing the lever closed to lock it.
  • Installing Rip Fence: The rip fence is installed by loosening the fence lock knobs, sliding the rip fence bar into the baseplate slots to the desired distance from the blade, and then tightening the lock knobs.
  • Dust Collection: The tool has a Dust Port for connecting a dust collection system/bag (sold separately). The Dust Blower Lever can be slid to the right to open the port or to the left to close it if no collection system is used.
  • Adjusting Cutting Speed: A Speed Dial allows users to select cutting speeds from 1 (slow) to 6 (fast) to match the workpiece material. Faster settings are recommended for softer materials.
  • Adjusting Cutting Mode (Orbital Action): The Cutting Mode Lever allows selection of "O" for straight cutting (vertical blade movement only) or "I", "II", or "III" for orbital cutting (circular blade motion). Higher numbers indicate a larger orbit. Orbital settings should not be used for metal or hardwoods. The cutting mode should not be adjusted while the saw is operating.
  • Laser Guide: A Laser ON/OFF Button activates the integrated laser for guiding cuts.
  • Operation Controls: The tool is operated by a Trigger. A Lock ON Button allows for continuous operation without holding the trigger. A Power ON Light indicates when the tool is powered.
  • Workpiece Setup: Users are instructed to secure workpieces with a vise or clamps to prevent movement during operation. The work area should be clean, well-lit, and free of distractions.
  • Safety Precautions: Emphasizes wearing eye protection (ANSI-approved) and breathing protection (NIOSH-approved) for specific hazards. Advises against operating the tool while tired or under the influence of drugs/alcohol. Stresses the importance of proper grounding for the corded tool and using appropriate extension cords. Warnings are provided regarding vibration exposure and the use of optical instruments with the laser.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, inspect the tool for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, cracked or broken parts, damaged electrical wiring, and any other condition that may affect safe operation.
  • Post-Use Cleaning: After use, wipe external surfaces with a clean cloth.
  • Ventilation Openings: Keep ventilation openings clean and free of dirt and debris. Use compressed air to clean ducts, wearing ANSI-approved safety goggles and NIOSH-approved dust mask/respirator.
  • Cleaning Body: The outer body can be cleaned with a clean cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use solvents or immerse the Jigsaw in liquid.
  • Cord Maintenance: If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a qualified service technician.
  • Troubleshooting: A troubleshooting guide is provided to address common issues such as the tool not starting, operating slowly, decreased performance, excessive noise/rattling, overheating, and laser guide malfunction, with suggested causes and solutions. For internal damage or wear, professional service is recommended.
  • General Maintenance: Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, and breakage of parts. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use.
