Materials not to be placed in a microwave oven
Material Remarks
Aluminium tray May cause arcing. Transfer food into a
microwave-safe dish.
Food carton with
metal handle
May cause arcing. Transfer food into a
microwave-safe dish.
Metal or metal-
trimmed utensils
Metal shields the food from microwave energy.
The metal trim may cause arcing.
Metal twist ties May cause arcing and could cause a fire in the
oven.
Paper bags May cause a fire in the oven.
Plastic foam Plastic foam may melt or contaminate the liquid
inside when exposed to a high temperature.
Wood Wood will dry out when used in the microwave
oven and may split or crack.
Grill and hot air function
o The ovenware must be resistant to a temperature of at least
300°.
o Plastic dishes are not suitable for use under the grill.
Microwave and grill function
o The ovenware must be suitable for use in a microwave and grill.
Lids
o We recommend that you use glass or plastic lids or Clingfilm,
this will ensure the following:-
a) Prevent excessive evaporation during longer cooking
times.
b) The cooking times are shorter.
c) The food does not become dry.
d) The aroma is preserved.
o The lid should have holes or openings, so that no pressure
develops. Plastic bags must also be opened.
o Baby feeding bottles or jars with baby food and similar
containers can ONLY be heated without their tops/lids, otherwise
they may burst.
