WARNING: Ensure power is disconnected at the fuse/breaker distribution panel before installing or
servicing the wall control and fan!
CAUTION: Installation must be completed in strict conformance with local building and electrical
codes.
WARNING: If installing the fan in Australia, qualified licensed professionals should perform all
installation work.
Review the safety guidelines in the complete Haiku® Installation Guide. If you have questions about any
aspect of the installation process, contact Haiku Technical Service at www.haikufan.com for assistance.
PARTS AND HARDWARE
If you are missing any parts or hardware required for the installation of your Haiku wall control, contact Haiku
Technical Service. Note: Drawings are not to scale.
Wall control (2) #6-32 x 7/8” screw RF board Antenna retainer
Note: If your wall control kit does not include a wall plate, Big Ass Fans recommends using a Decora® wall
plate. Other brands may not be compatible. The junction box and wire connectors are customer supplied.
INSTALLATION
While installing the fan(s) according to the complete Haiku Installation Guide, follow the steps below to
install the Haiku wall control and RF board. It is possible to link up to four (4) Haiku fans to a single controller
to simultaneously control airflow, lights, and special features. If installing linked fans, the first fan must be
located within 20 ft (6 m) of the wall controller. Successive fans must be within 20 ft (6 m) of each other and
with no physical obstructions.
Step 1. Set the wall control address
a) Remove the rubber covering from the back of the wall control. Locate the
DIP switch and rotary switch. See bottom right of this page for the switch
location on the wall control.
b) Toggle DIP switch 1 either on or o, and then turn the rotary switch to one
of sixteen channels. Use a small screwdriver or similar tool to turn the
rotary switch. Together DIP switch 1 and the rotary switch allow 32 unique frequency settings (two sets of
16) to prevent interference between multiple wall controls.
c) Set DIP switches 2–4 as shown below. Make sure switch 3 is o. Settings for switches 2 and 4 depend on
whether the wall control will control a single fan or multiple fans, and whether any of the fans has a light.

Maintenance

Overview

The Haiku Wall Control Kit is designed to provide comprehensive control over Haiku fans, including airflow, lighting, and special features. This kit allows for the simultaneous control of up to four Haiku fans from a single wall controller, with specific requirements for fan placement to ensure proper communication. The first fan must be within 20 ft (6 m) of the wall controller, and subsequent fans must be within 20 ft (6 m) of each other, without physical obstructions.

Function Description

The Haiku Wall Control Kit enables users to manage various aspects of their Haiku fan(s) through a wall-mounted control unit and an RF (Radio Frequency) board installed within each fan. The system is designed to prevent interference between multiple wall controls by offering 32 unique frequency settings, configured via a DIP switch and a rotary switch on both the wall control and the RF board.

The wall control operates independently for the fan and the light, allowing separate adjustments for each. It features buttons for powering the fan and light on/off, increasing/decreasing fan speed, and adjusting light brightness. Additionally, it includes specialized modes such as Timer mode, Sleep mode, and Whoosh mode, which enhance comfort and energy efficiency.

The RF board, installed in the fan's circuit board, receives signals from the wall control. It must be configured with matching address settings to ensure proper communication. An antenna retainer secures the antenna within the fan's hub, optimizing signal reception.

Usage Features

Installation and Setup:

The installation process involves setting the address on both the wall control and the RF board(s). This is done by configuring DIP switches and a rotary switch to match. The settings vary depending on whether the wall control manages a single fan or multiple fans, and if any fan includes a light. For multiple fans, specific settings apply to the "first fan" (closest to the wall control) and "subsequent linked fan(s)."

The RF board is then installed into the fan's circuit board. Depending on the fan's circuit board design (one or two rows of female connectors), the RF board's prongs are inserted accordingly. An antenna retainer is then attached to the inner side of the fan's hub wall, securing the antenna for optimal signal reception.

Wiring the wall control involves connecting it to the power supply and the fan. The wire color chart provides guidance for North America and Australia, specifying connections for AC Line, AC Neutral, PE/Ground, and AC Load (Switch Leg). It is recommended to use switch leg wiring.

After installation, the system should be tested. If the fan(s) do not respond, users are instructed to turn off power, select a different address on the wall control, set the matching address on the RF board(s), and retest. Power must be off during address changes for the changes to be accepted.

Wall Control Operation:

The wall control allows for independent operation of the fan and light. A Power Cutoff Tab on the wall control face must be flush for operation.

  • Powering the Fan: The On/Off button on the right side of the wall control turns the fan on or off and can reset its speed. The fan will restart at its last operating speed when power is restored.
  • Changing Fan Speed: Up and Down Speed buttons adjust the fan's speed. Fan mode indicators illuminate, and a short beep is heard as speed changes.
  • Timer Mode (T): This mode allows the fan to run at a set speed for a programmed duration (1–7 hours). Pressing the Timer button multiple times sets the end time. The Timer setting is displayed on the speed indicator bar. Timer mode is disabled if the fan speed is 0 (off) or if the fan is not running.
  • Sleep Mode (S): When activated (after setting fan speed and Timer mode), Sleep mode reduces the fan speed by one increment every hour until the lowest speed is reached, then turns the fan off. Sleep mode is only active when Timer mode is used.
  • Whoosh Mode (W): This mode simulates natural breezes by automatically varying the fan speed. Users set the desired maximum fan speed, then press the Whoosh button. The top Speed indicator flashes to confirm activation.

Operating the Light:

The Haiku LED light kit operates independently from the fan.

  • Powering the Light: The Light On/Off button on the left side of the wall control turns the light on or off. The light will turn on to its last setting when power is restored.
  • Changing Brightness: Up and Down Light buttons adjust brightness. Holding these buttons allows for quick adjustments.

Maintenance Features

Safety Precautions:

Before any installation or servicing, it is crucial to ensure that power is disconnected at the fuse/breaker panel. This is a critical safety warning emphasized throughout the manual. Installation must comply with local building and electrical codes. In Australia, licensed professionals must perform electrical installation.

Troubleshooting:

If the fan does not respond to commands from the wall control, users are advised to adjust the position of the antenna in the retainer. This suggests that signal reception can be affected by antenna placement. The manual also provides a troubleshooting step for addressing radio frequency interference by changing the address settings on both the wall control and the RF board.

Power Cutoff for Maintenance:

For any maintenance on the fan or wall control, the Power Cutoff Tab at the lower end of the control face must be pushed to disconnect power. This tab should be protruding outward (Off position) before any work is performed. Users are reminded that the fan will automatically restart at its last operating speed when power is restored.

The manual directs users to the complete Haiku Installation Guide for detailed troubleshooting and fan maintenance instructions, indicating that this kit manual focuses primarily on the wall control's installation and operation.
