38. MACHINE
GUN
INSTALLATION-30
Cal.
Right:
a.
Dismount
the
50 cal.
gun
as
follows,
first
removing
the
necessary
cowling:
Loosen
the
blast
tube
connection
to
the
gun.
Disconnect
the
impulse
wires
from
the
trigger
motor.
Remove
the
trunnion
and
mounting
post
bolts
and
the
gun
may
be
withdrawn
through
the
cockpit.
b.
Remove
the
50
and
30 cal.
housings
under
the
ammunition
reels
and
remove
the
ammunition
on
the
reels.
Remove
the
bolt
through
the
lower
end
of
the
rear
reel
spindle
support
and
rotat~
the
support
clear
of
the
spindle.
Turn
the
spindle
about
45°
anti-clockwise
and
draw
out.
Remove
the
50 cal. reel
and
install
the
30
cal.
reel.
Note
that
additional
washers
placed
between
the
reels
and
a
bushing
is
installed
on
the
fore
end
of
the
spindle.
Rotate
the
spindle
clockwise
to
lock
and
replace
the
rear
spindle
support.
Swing
the
rear
mounting
post
block
into
place
and
fasten
it.
Remove
the
,50
cal.
ammunition
chute,
loosen
the
clamp
for
the
feed
chute,
rotate
90 °
aft
and
install
30
cal.
feed
chute.
Install
30 cal.
ejection
chute,
relocating
the
inside
clamp
to
agree
with
the
chute.
Change
the
reel
brake
to
the
30 cal.
setting.
Transfer
the
indicator
from
the
50 cal.
to
the
30
cal.
reel
housing
and
install
the
housings.
c.
Move
the
control
cable
housing
stop
to
the
lug
approximately
two
inches
aft.
d.
Install
the
30 cal. gun
and
connect
the
impulse
wire
and
housing.
e.
Align
the
gun
as
described
in
paragraph
37, c.
f.
Lock
all
bolts
and
replace
the
cowling.
39.
MACHINE GUN
SIGHT
INSTALLATION:
a.
Aldis
unit
sight.
Level
the
airplane
as
directed
in
paragraph
10,
page
13.
Stretch
a line
from
the
top
rudder
hinge
to
an
upright
on
the
crankshaft,
the
line
to
be
plumb
over
the
thrust
line.
Install
the
unit
sight
brackets
in
the
first
and
third
holes
forward
of
the
cockpit,
½
inch
to
the
right
of
the
center
line
of
the
airplane
and
adjust
the
height
approxi-
mately
to
suit
the
hole
in
the
windshield.
Remove
the
eye
rest
from
the
sight.
Place
the
sight
in
the
brackets.
Replace
the
eye
rest.
Adjust
the
fore
and
aft
position
of
the
sight
to
suit
the
pilot
and
lock
in
place.
Level
the
sight
by
means
of a
spirit
level
so
that
the
center
line
of
the
sight
is
14
1/s
inches
above
the
top
of
the
upper
longeron
and
secure
the
vertical
adjust-
ment
of
the
mounting
posts.
Center
the
eye
piece
of
the
sight
in
the
windshield
opening
by
means
of
the
slotted
holes
in
the
bracket
and
lock
in
place.
Adjust
the
sight
parallel
to
the
thrust
line
by
means
of
offsets
from
the
plumb-
line
and
lock
the
front
bracket.

This
sight
may
be
installed
either½
or
inches
to
the
right
of
the
center
line of
the
airplane,
sockets
being
provided
accordingly
.
Install
the
adapter
in
the
forward
hole
of
the
sight
mount
with
sight
socket
to
the
rear
and
lock
in
place.
Set
the
vertical
adjustment
of
the
sight
in
its
mid
position
.
Install
the
sight
and
level
with
a
spirit
level
so
that
its
center
line
is
14
1/s
inches
above
the
top
of
the
upper
longeron.
Lock
the
vertical
adjm;tment.
c.
Ring
and
bead
sight.
Install
the
bead
sight
in
the
rear
socket
to
the
left
of
the
center
line ot
the
airplane.
Adjust
vertically
so
that
the
center
of
the
bead
is
141/s
inches
above
the
top
of
the
upper
longeron,
and
lock
in
position.
Install
the
ring
sight
in
the
socket
located
12
inches
forward
of
the
bead
sight.
Adjust
the
center
of
the
ring
sight
to
the
same
height
as
the
bead
sight
and
lock
in
position.
Adjust
the
ring
sight
laterally
by
means
of
offsets
from
the
center
line so
that
its
lateral
distance
from
the
center
line
is
equal
to
that
of
the
bead
sight.
d.
It
is
recommended
that
the
sight
installations
be
checked
by
firing
the
guns
at
a
target.
This
may
be
accomplished
by
supporting
the
tail
of
the
airplane
so
that
the
thrust
line
is
approximately
level
and
then
firing
the
guns
into
a
target
set
up
at
the
desired
range.
The
sights
should
then
be
brought
into
agreement
with
the
guns.
40. CAMERA
GUN
INSTALLATION: a .
The
Cl'l;mera
gun
is
installed
on
the
top
of
the
upper
wing
on
the
center
line
of
the
airplane.
It
is
secured
to
the
wing
by
a
tripod
mount
which
is
bolted
to
fittings
on
the
front
and
rear
spars.
The
word
"Camera"
will
be
found
stenciled
on
the
fabric
near
the
fittings.
b.
If
the
mount
has
not
been
installed
previously,
locate
the
holes
in
the
fittings
by
means
of
an
awl
or
similar
tool.
Punch
through
the
fabric
and
re-tap
the
holes
with
a 10-32
USF
tap.
Adjust
the
rear
and
right
hand
legs of
the
camera
mount
to
suit
the
fittings
and
bolt
in
place.
Use
lockwashers
to
secure
the
bolts.
