4 Information on mode, battery voltage and battery capacity
i For exhausted batteries, the BAT 490 initially em-
ploys soft charging. The charging current level is
governed by the battery capacity setting. The mes-
sage "
Soft charge" appears on the display and the
green and yellow LEDs flash at 1-second intervals.
9. Charging is stopped with
or by disconnecting the
charging clips.
? The green LED is off.
? The "Modes" menu is displayed.
i If charging is interrupted, the process must be
re-started.
10. Switch off the BAT 490 on completion of charging.
11. Remove the charging clips from the battery.
i In the case of cyclical battery operation
(wheelchairs, sweepers, ...), at least every 3rd char-
ging process should take the form of full charging to
maintain the battery capacity as long as possible.
4.4.2 Charging with "Expert" charging characteristic
! Incorrect parameter values (excessively high valu-
es for I or U1 and an insufficient value for "o") may
destroy the battery.

and "o" : Governed by the set value,
refer to "Configuration >> Parameters"
in Section 5.1
Phase 1 (t1): Main charging, green LED flashes
rapidly
The battey is charged at a constant charging current I
until the voltage U1 is attained.
Phase 2 (t2): Main charging, green LED flashes
rapidly or slowly
The charging voltage U1 is kept constant and the char-
ging current decreases with increasing battery charge.
The green LED flashes rapidly until the current limit
value "o" is attained.
i In rare cases the limit value "o" is attained in less
than 30 minutes and the green LED flashes slowly
until the end of the 30 minute period.
Phase 3 (t3): Trickle charging, green LED lights
Trickle charging commences on completion of the mini-
mum 30 minute period and when the current limit value
"o" is attained or undershot. The BAT 490 sets the bat-
tery voltage U
2
. The charging current I is governed by
the capacity of the battery to be charged and the time
profile.
i The battery need not be disconnected from the
vehicle electrical system during charging. Charging
takes place as described in Section 4.4.2.
