Summary

VCO 1 & 2

1 Octave

Sets the VCO's octave in terms of organ stop. 8' equals native pitch, 4' = one octave above, 16' = 1 octave below etc.

2 Type

Sets the VCO's oscillator type. The pulse oscillator is available on VCO1 only.

3 Pulse Width (VCO 1 only)

Sets the pulse width of the pulse oscillator.

4 Pulse Width Modulation Source (VCO 1 only)

Switches the modulation source for the pulse width.

5 Coarse Tune

Sets the VCO's coarse tuning in semitones.

6 Fine Tune

Sets the VCO's fine-tuning in cents.

7 Keyboard (KB)

Switches if the VCO's pitch is influenced by the keyboard's CV. If set to off, the keyboard's CV is ignored.

8 Mod Amount

Sets the general amount of modulation applied to the VCO's pitch. Needs to be set above 0 to enable S&H pitch modulation.

9 Mod Source Env1

Switches how envelope 1's CV influences the VCO's pitch. +/-: positive Env1 CV raises/lowers pitch. Off: no modulation.

10 Mod Source LFO

Switches how the LFO CV output influences the VCO's pitch. +/-: positive LFO voltage raises/lowers pitch. Off: no modulation.

11 Mod Source Aftertouch

Switches how aftertouch intensity influences the VCO's pitch. +/-: higher aftertouch raises/lowers pitch. Off: no modulation.

12 Mod Source Ext1

Switches how the external signal Ext 1 influences the VCO's pitch. +/-: higher ext signal raises/lowers pitch. Off: no modulation.

13 Spread

A plugin-only feature adjusting stereo width of each oscillator separately. Adds width to your sounds.

14 Osc Sync (On;Off)

Switches oscillator sync on or off. VCO 2 is master, VCO 1 is slave.

15 Sync Mod Source

Switches the modulation source for the sync. If set to AT or MW, a threshold must be exceeded to engage sync.

1 FM Mod

Switches frequency modulation (FM) on or off. If engaged, VCO 2 sine output modulates VCO 1 pitch.

2 FM Level

Sets the amount of frequency modulation (FM). VCO 1 pitch is always modulated by VCO 2 sine output.

Osc MIXER

1 VCO 1

Sets the VCO 1 output level. The mixer stage is tube-based and can slightly saturate or distort.

2 VCO 2

Sets the VCO 2 output level.

3 VCO 2 Mod Source

Switches the modulation source for the VCO 2 output level. Mod source can be Mod Wheel, Aftertouch or Off.

4 Noise

Sets the noise generator output level. Useful for percussive sounds and layering.

5 Noise Mod Source

Switches the modulation source for the noise generator output level. Mod source can be Mod Wheel, Aftertouch or Off.

6 Noise Type

Select between White, Pink, and Red noise.

7 Ring Mod

Sets the ring modulation output level. No audible output if Drive Vols or Ring Mod Level are 0.

8 Ring Mod Mod Source

Switches the modulation source for the ring mod output level. Mod source can be Mod Wheel, Aftertouch or Off.

Ext CV

1 Ext 1

Sets scaling of the external sidechain signal. The fullscale signal (-1 to +1) will be scaled up to -10 to +10 volts.

2 Ext 2

Sets scaling of the external sidechain signal. The fullscale signal (-1 to +1) will be scaled up to -10 to +10 volts.

LFO

1 Type

Sets the LFO type. Available waveforms are Triangle, Pulse and Sine. Forms can be modified via Symmetry.

2 Speed Coarse

Switches the LFO speed by a factor of approx. 10 per step. In sync mode: 4/1, 2/1, 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32.

3 Speed Fine

Sets the LFO speed in combination with Speed Coarse. Slow: 0.2-3.5 Hz, Medium: 2-35 Hz, Fast: 20-350 Hz.

4 Speed Fine Mod

Switches modulation of LFO speed on or off. If engaged, it can be modulated by Mod Wheel.

5 Keyboard Trigger

Switches if the LFO is retriggered by every keyboard signal or works in free-running mode.

6 Symmetry

Sets the symmetry of LFO waveforms. Changes durations of the first and second half of the waveform.

7 Amplitude

Sets the LFO amplitude. Maximum peak to peak value is 5 Volts.

8 Amplitude Mod

Switches modulation of LFO amplitude on or off. If engaged, it can be modulated by Mod Wheel.

9 Offset

Adds an additional offset to the LFO CV output. Can switch LFO output from symmetric to asymmetric behaviour.

VCF

1 Frequency

Sets the VCF's cutoff frequency. The output filter is a low pass 4th order ladder filter.

2 Keyboard Tracking

Determines how much the cutoff frequency is varied by the keyboard's CV.

3 Resonance

Sets the VCF's resonance. The filter will self-oscillate with higher resonance settings.

4 M;S

Controls mid/side signal processing through the filter. Adjusts how much mid and side signal passes through or bypasses the filter.

5 Mod f Amount

Sets the general amount of modulation applied to the VCF's cutoff frequency.

6 Mod Source Env 1

Switches how envelope 1's CV influences the VCF's cutoff frequency. +/-: positive Env1 CV raises/lowers frequency. Off: no modulation.

7 Mod Source LFO

Switches how the LFO CV output influences the VCF's cutoff frequency. +/-: positive LFO voltage raises/lowers frequency. Off: no modulation.

8 Mod Source AT

Switches how aftertouch intensity influences the VCF's cutoff frequency. +/-: higher aftertouch raises/lowers frequency. Off: no modulation.

9 Mod Source Ext 1

Switches how ext 1 voltage influences the VCF's cutoff frequency. +/-: higher ext 1 voltage raises/lowers frequency. Off: no modulation.

10 Mod Source Ext 2

Switches how ext 2 voltage influences the VCF's cutoff frequency. +/-: higher ext 2 voltage raises/lowers frequency. Off: no modulation.

11 Frequency Scaling

Changes the filter cutoff range available via the VCF Frequency knob.

12 Frequency Tuning

Adds an offset to the filter cutoff calculation.

Envelope 1 & 2 (VCA)

1 Trigger

Selects the gate trigger.

2 Attack

Sets the attack time.

3 Decay

Sets the decay time.

4 Sustain

Sets the sustain level.

5 Release

Sets the release time.

6 Velocity

Selects how keyboard velocity changes envelope amplitude. Velocity scales envelope amplitude; only Env2 controls output volume.

7 Gate Open

If engaged, the gate is always opened, regardless of trigger status.

8 Time x5

If engaged, all envelope timing constants (ADR) are multiplied by a factor of approx. 5.

Ring Mod

1 Drive Vols

Sets the input drive of both signal sources - input and carrier. No audible output if Drive Vols or Ring Mod Level are 0.

2 Input

Switches the input signal source for the ring modulation.

3 Carrier

Switches the carrier signal source for the ring modulation.

Output

1 Master Volume

Sets the master volume. Increasing it adds harmonics/dirt/saturation.

2 LFO to VCA

If engaged, LFO output controls the VCA. LFO signal sums with other VCA control voltages.

3 VCA Mode

Boost mode offers gain staging for the VCA tube stage. Boosts input by 12dB, attenuates output by 12dB.

4 Amp Mode

Selects one of three output amp tube modes: Triode, Pentode, Saturated. Experiment to change sound colour.

Glide & Keyboard

1 Glide

Sets the time constant for gliding from one note to the next. Increasing parameter makes glides take longer.

2 Mode

Sets the glide (portamento) mode. On: Glide active. Auto: legato glide. Off: Glide inactive. Usable in mono mode.

3 Glide Dest Osc 1

Selects if glide is applied to VCO 1.

4 Glide Dest Osc 2

Selects if glide is applied to VCO 2.

5 Transpose

Transposes pitch in a range between -2 and +2 octaves. Affects VCO pitch if Keyboard parameter is off.

Pitch Bend & Mod Wheel

1 Pitchbend

Sets the maximum pitch offset via Pitchbend in semitones. If set to A, adjustable offset range via Pitchbend Adjust trim screw.

2 Osc 1

Selects if Pitchbend should modulate VCO 1's pitch.

3 Osc 2

Selects if Pitchbend should modulate VCO 2's pitch.

4 Pitchbend Adjust

Sets the pitch offset for adjustable mode. Maximum range is 2 semitones (200 cents).

5 MW Scale

Sets the scaling of the Mod Wheel.

6 MW Dest

Sets the destination modulated by the Mod Wheel. Can modulate various parameters when selected as a source.

Sample & Hold

1 Source

Sets the input source that should be sampled.

2 Trigger

Sets the trigger input that determines when to capture a new sample.

3 Destination

Sets the destination to which the held sample is applied.

4 Pitch Quantization

Plugin-only feature. When active and S&H destination is pitch, output is quantized to semitone steps.

5 Multi-Mode

Plugin-only feature. Multi: different sample per voice. Single: same sample for all voices.

OPT

1 Voice (Voice Handling)

Plugin-only feature setting the number of voices playable simultaneously.

2 Unison

Engages or disengages unison mode.

3 TMT

Plugin-only feature activating or deactivating TMT. TMT analyzes tube tolerances for analogue sound.

4 Velocity Mode

Sets if each new note uses its own velocity (Multi) or if all notes use first note's velocity (Single) in legato.

5 After Touch Dest

Converts Midi Aftertouch into two continuous values: Aftertouch voltage and optocoupler control voltage.

6 Velocity Mode AT Amount

Sets the amount of modulation applied to AT modulated destinations.

7 Ring Carrier

If engaged, aftertouch modulates ring mod carrier's drive, affecting ring mod effect.

8 VCA Gain

If engaged, aftertouch modulates the VCA gain.

9 VCF Res

If engaged, aftertouch modulates the VCF resonance.

10 External In

If engaged, aftertouch as modulation source is replaced by external input (Ext 1).

11 Pulse Width

If engaged, aftertouch modulates the pulse width.

12 Quantize

With Quantize engaged, pressure sensitivity detection has 3 discrete values: Off, Low, High.

Arpeggiator

1 Arp Mode

The Modes are: As Played, Up, Down, Up & Down, Down & Up, Chord and Random.

2 Octave

Select Octaves relative to keys pressed. Multiple octaves play before pattern repeats.

3 Trigger

Legato: note addition/release does not retrigger Arp. Every Note: always retriggers. Hold: notes stay active.

4 Clock

Divider selects arpeggiator speed relative to host tempo (incl. triplets/dotted). Swing adjusts swing factor.

5 Arp Stereo Panning

Activates or deactivates Stereo Panning mode. Active only when arpeggiator is engaged.

6 Arp Stereo Panning Mode

Sets the order in which audio gets panned. L>R: left to right. L<R: right to left. L/R: alternating hard-panned.

7 Arp Stereo Panning Steps

Sets how many equidistant steps the panorama is divided into. Example: 16 steps divide panorama into 16 16ths.

8 Arp Stereo Panning Intensity

Sets the cone of the panorama. 100% means range from 100% left to 100% right.

FX Section

1 Digital Delay

Modelled after a classic bucket-brigade delay. Rich addition to sound. Sync delay to host.

2 Mäag AIR BAND

Iconic filter from Mäag EQ2/EQ4 or MAGNUM-K compressor. Adds extra Air to sound.

3 Reverb

Classic reverb from bathroom to cathedral. Adjust room size and feedback for desired reverb amount.

4 Flanger

Modelled after classic Flanger pedals. Offers additional possibilities. Speed syncable with host tempo or free running.

5 Blue Chorus

Brainworx classic giving typical sound of a chorus stompbox.

6 Metal666

Amp simulation. Starts gently but unleashes beast with higher Gain/Out settings.

7 Phaser

World's most popular phaser pedal emulation with 4-stage phasing sound. Offers 2-stage predecessor and 6-stage mode.

8 SPL EQ Ranger

Quick and intuitive frequency treatment. Adds SPL flavour to synthesis via tweaking.

9 Wavefolder

Sets amount of wavefolding and generated harmonics. Amount depends on input level.

Preset Management

1 Preset Menu

Allows filtering by Types, Subtypes, Modes, Authors, Banks. Results column shows matching presets.

2 Preset Dropdown

Shows menu items with lists of presets filtered by criteria. "Current Filter" lists all matching presets.

3 Save; Overwrite Preset

Allows overwriting or saving current preset as new. Saving new preset opens dialogue for fields like author, type, bank.

4 Preset Auto player

Sets number of bars for each preset playback. Jumps to next preset in category list.

5 Search

Start typing to immediately filter results. Search covers all fields (Types, Author, Bank), not just preset names.

Parameter Locking

Parameter Locking

Right-clicking a parameter toggles a locked state, displayed with a lock symbol. Locked parameters remain set through preset changes.

NKS compatibility

Knifonium is fully NKS compatible. Uses papreset format internally, similar to NKS.

MIDI Learn

1 MIDI Learn Mode

Click MIDI Learn button to assign CC messages from hardware controller to Knifonium's controls. Colour overlay shows assignment status.

2 Assigning

To assign a MIDI CC, click control. Overlay shows parameter name. Next received CC message is assigned.

3 Resetting

Use "Reset" button at top of synth GUI to unassign all MIDI CCs in one click.

4 Reading

Use "Read" button to load a previously saved controller assignment.

5 Storing

Use "Store" button to save controller assignment in an .xml file. Useful for different hardware controllers.

Top Toolbar

1 Foldout

Foldout button extends or retracts sections like Effects, Modulation, and Arpeggiator.

2 Undo;Redo

Undo and redo changes to Knifonium controls. Works for up to 32 steps.

3 Global Tune

Adjusts global tuning of the Knifonium. Shown frequency corresponds to note A4.

4 Panic

Clicking button immediately silences Knifonium and turns all notes off.

A word on CPU usage

Voice Handling

When playing one voice, highest note has priority. With more voices, priority given to the next note.
