Overview

This document describes the BrassMaster Plus MEGAbite water filtration system, designed for residential use to remove iron and hydrogen sulfide from water.

Function Description

The BrassMaster Plus MEGAbite is a water filtration system that utilizes a specialized filter media to reduce iron and hydrogen sulfide in raw water. The system operates by flowing water through the MEGAbite filter, which captures and removes these contaminants. It incorporates an air injection screen, crucial for proper filter regeneration, and a water inlet check valve. The system is equipped with a control valve that manages regeneration cycles, ensuring the filter media remains effective. A manually operated bypass device allows the unit to be isolated for maintenance while maintaining water service to the household. The system is designed to be supplied only with cold water.

Important Technical Specifications

The BrassMaster Plus MEGAbite system comes in two models, MB-100 and MB-200, with varying capacities and flow rates:

Recommended Maximum Iron in Raw Water:

  • MB-100: 5 PPM (mg/L)
  • MB-200: 5 PPM (mg/L)

Feed Water Temperature Range: 34 - 110°F Feed Water Pressure Range: 30 - 100 PSIG

Service Flow Rate:

  • MB-100: 10 GPM at 12 PSID
  • MB-200: 12 GPM at 15 PSID

System Capacity:

  • MB-100: 650 Gallons
  • MB-200: 1,200 Gallons

System Performance (Average Reductions):

  • Iron: 96.75%
  • Hydrogen Sulfide: 97.99%

Performance Data Sheet Reduction Claims:

  • Hydrogen Sulfide:
    • Influent Challenge Concentration: 1.0 PPM (mg/L) ± 10%
    • Maximum Permissible Product Water Concentration: 0.05 PPM (mg/L)
  • Iron:
    • Influent Challenge Concentration: 3 to 5 PPM (mg/L)
    • Maximum Permissible Product Water Concentration: 0.3 PPM (mg/L)

Regeneration Water Usage:

  • MB-100: 88 gallons
  • MB-200: 130 gallons

Certifications: Models MB-100 and MB-200 are certified by IAPMO R&T against NSF/ANSI 42 for Iron and Hydrogen Sulfide reduction. They are also certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372 for material safety and lead-free requirements. The system is lead-free and UPC certified.

Electrical Requirements: The unit connects to a separate 120V, 15 amp, ground fault interrupt (GFI) outlet.

Usage Features

Installation:

  • Location: The MEGAbite should be installed shortly after the incoming water supply shutoff, but after any outside water lines, ensuring all interior-bound water flows through it. No filters should be installed upstream to prevent pressure issues.
  • Water Piping: The unit includes a manually operated bypass device. Sweat-solder connections must be made within 6 inches of the unit to prevent damage to the valve. The bypass valve should be in the "Bypass" position during initial connections and until startup.
  • Drain Line: A 5/8" drain line (supplied) connects to the control valve and runs to a nearby drain. A hose clamp is recommended to secure the tubing. A minimum 1-1/2" air gap must be maintained at the drain end to prevent backflow.
  • Power: Connect the power cord to a dedicated 120V, 15 amp GFI outlet.

Start-Up Procedure: The start-up involves pre-soaking the filter media, flushing the system, and running a complete regeneration.

  • Pre-soak: Press and hold the "extra cycle" button for 5+ seconds. The display will show "BW," then a countdown timer. Press "extra cycle" again for "BR," then another countdown. Press again for "RR," then another countdown. Slowly open the bypass valve to "service" position and allow the "RR" cycle to complete. Water will flow from the drain line.
  • Flush: After the "RR" cycle, wait 2 minutes for the unit to enter service mode (faucet symbol appears). Press and hold "extra cycle" for 5+ seconds to enter "BW" mode. After 30 seconds, water will flow from the drain line, potentially discolored. Continue flushing until water is clear. Use the "extra cycle" button to advance through "BR" and "RR" cycles to return to service mode.
  • Regenerate: After flushing, press and hold "extra cycle" for 5+ seconds to initiate a complete regeneration cycle.

Control Panel Features: The control panel includes:

  • Parameter Display: Shows current settings.
  • Data Display: Alternates between time of day, volume remaining, or days to regeneration.
  • Error/Information Icon: Indicates system status.
  • Service Icon: Flashes if a regeneration cycle has been queued.
  • Normal Operation Mode Icon: Indicates normal operation.
  • Flow Indicator: Flashes when outlet flow is detected.
  • Programming Icon: For setting parameters.
  • Buttons: Extra Cycle, Up, and Down buttons for navigation and adjustments.

User Programming:

  • Setting Current Time/Day: Use Up/Down buttons to adjust the time.
  • Day Override (DO): This setting determines the maximum number of days between regeneration cycles. The system will regenerate regardless of usage if this limit is reached. Factory default is 2 days. Recommendations based on iron content are:
    • 0-3 PPM Iron: 3 Days
    • 4-5 PPM Iron: 2 Days
    • 6+ PPM Iron: 1 Day
  • Regeneration Time (RT): Sets the time of day for regeneration. Default is 12:30 AM. It's important to offset this time by at least 2 hours from any water softener's regeneration time to ensure adequate pressure.

Maintenance Features

Routine Maintenance:

  • Injector, Screen, and Inlet Check Valve Cleaning: It is recommended to clean these components every 6 months. Lint and debris can plug the air injection screen, leading to poor regeneration and filtration performance. The inlet check valve can also malfunction due to dirt and debris. Instructional videos are available online.

Assured Performance Modular (APM) Design:

  • The BrassMaster and BrassMaster Plus systems feature an APM design, where nearly all serviceable parts are contained within a removable/replaceable brass module. This design simplifies repairs, as a faulty valve component can be easily removed and replaced, reducing costly and time-consuming field repairs.
  • A technical video library and downloadable forms for module replacement are available on the Water Control Corporation website.

Warranty:

  • Control Valve: Warranted for 5 years from installation against manufacturer's defects.
  • Fiberglass Reinforced Mineral Tank and Plastic Brine Tank: Warranted for 5 years from installation against manufacturer's defects.
  • Coverage: Repair or replacement of defective products at the discretion of Water Control Corporation. Replacement parts are provided FOB Ramsey, MN. This warranty is transferable.
  • Exclusions:
    • Wear or malfunction due to unfavorable water conditions.
    • Unauthorized repairs, modifications, alterations, or adjustments.
    • Misuse, abuse, accidents, or unreasonable use.
    • Improper control settings.
    • Incorrect electric current, voltage, or supply.
    • Failure to test water at recommended intervals.
    • Improper installation.
    • Voided if serial numbers are removed or altered.
    • Costs for service calls related to installation errors, user instruction, or transport to servicer.
    • Costs associated with removal or installation of defective/replacement products.
    • Consequential, special, or incidental damages.

Support: For factory module support, customers can contact WCC (Water Control Corporation) via phone, fax, or their website.
