Do you have a question about the Brother DCP-7090DW and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document serves as a Quick Setup Guide for the Brother DCP-7090DW, DCP-7190DW, DCP-L2535DW, and DCP-L2550DW series of multifunction devices. It provides essential instructions for unpacking, initial setup, and connecting the device to a computer or mobile device.

The Brother DCP series devices are designed to offer printing, copying, and scanning functionalities, making them suitable for home offices or small businesses. The "DW" in the model names typically indicates that these models support Duplex (two-sided) printing and Wireless connectivity, enhancing their versatility and convenience.

Function Description:

These devices are all-in-one machines, meaning they integrate multiple office functions into a single unit.

  • Printing: They are capable of monochrome (black and white) laser printing, delivering crisp text and graphics. The duplex printing feature allows for automatic two-sided printing, which helps save paper and reduces environmental impact.
  • Copying: Users can make copies of documents directly from the device without needing a computer. This includes features like resizing and multiple copies.
  • Scanning: The devices can scan documents and images to a computer or mobile device. The "Scan only by Brother iPrint&Scan" note suggests that advanced scanning features or specific mobile scanning functionalities are primarily supported through Brother's proprietary application.
  • Connectivity: The devices offer multiple connectivity options to suit various user environments. These include USB 2.0 for direct connection to a computer, wired Ethernet for network integration, and wireless LAN for flexible placement and access from multiple devices.

Usage Features:

The Quick Setup Guide highlights several key usage features and considerations:

  • Easy Unpacking and Setup: The initial steps guide the user through unpacking the machine and checking for all included components, such as the drum unit, inbox toner cartridge, USB interface cable, Brother Installation Disc, Quick Setup Guide, and Product Safety Guide. This ensures that users have everything they need to get started.
  • Component Installation: The guide provides clear visual instructions for installing the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly, including removing packing materials and securing the components. It also shows how to remove an orange protective part and push the toner firmly into place.
  • Paper Handling: Instructions for loading paper into the paper tray are provided, emphasizing the correct orientation (printing surface down) and advising not to exceed the maximum paper mark. Users are also guided to adjust the paper guides to ensure proper paper feeding.
  • Power Connection: A straightforward step for connecting the power cord and turning on the machine is included, which is the final step before configuring the device for use.
  • Multiple Connection Options:
    • Computer Connection: Users can connect the device to a computer either via a USB cable, a wired network cable, or wirelessly. The guide recommends using a USB 2.0 cable (Type A/B) no longer than 2 metres and a straight-through Category 5 (or greater) twisted-pair cable for wired networks.
    • Driver Installation: For computer connections, users are directed to either use the included Brother Installation Disc or download the Full Driver & Software Package from the Brother website. Specific instructions are provided for Windows® (running start.exe from the CD/DVD-ROM) and Mac (choosing the CUPS driver).
    • Wireless Setup: The guide offers two methods for wireless setup:
      • Computer-assisted wireless setup: This is recommended for ease of configuration.
      • Alternative wireless setup: This method involves configuring the wireless settings directly from the machine's control panel. Users need to find their SSID (Network Name) and Network Key (Password) from their wireless access point/router. The guide provides steps to navigate the machine's menu (Network > WLAN > Setup Wizard) to select the SSID and enter the Network Key.
    • Mobile Device Connection: The devices support printing and scanning from mobile devices. Users are instructed to download and install the free Brother iPrint&Scan application. For Android™ users, additional recommendations include downloading and installing the Brother Print Service Plugin or the Mopria® Print Service app for enhanced printing capabilities. QR codes are provided for easy access to download pages.
  • Troubleshooting Connectivity: A "Can't Connect?" section offers basic troubleshooting steps for network issues, such as restarting the wireless access point/router, disconnecting and reconnecting cables, and restarting the machine and computer. It also directs users to the Brother website for FAQs and further troubleshooting.
  • Secure Network Access: A crucial security feature highlighted is the default password, which is located on a label on the back of the machine (preceded by "Pwd"). Users are strongly recommended to change this default password to protect the machine from unauthorized access, emphasizing the importance of network security.
  • Firmware Updates: Brother regularly updates firmware to add features and apply bug fixes. Users are encouraged to visit the Brother support website to check for the latest firmware, ensuring their device remains up-to-date with the newest functionalities and improvements.
  • Operation Videos and Manuals: The guide points users to a specific website for operation videos, FAQs, drivers, software, and manuals, providing comprehensive support resources beyond the initial setup.

Maintenance Features:

While the Quick Setup Guide primarily focuses on initial setup, it implicitly touches upon maintenance aspects:

  • Consumables Management: The installation of the drum unit and toner cartridge is a fundamental part of maintenance. The guide ensures users know how to properly install these consumables, which will be replaced periodically. The distinction between the drum unit and toner cartridge is important for users to understand for future replacements.
  • Paper Loading: Correct paper loading, including adjusting paper guides and not exceeding the maximum paper mark, is crucial for preventing paper jams and ensuring smooth operation, which is a common maintenance concern.
  • Firmware Updates: Keeping the device's firmware updated, as recommended, is a form of proactive maintenance. Firmware updates can improve performance, fix bugs, and enhance security, contributing to the longevity and reliability of the machine.
  • Cleaning (Implicit): Although not explicitly detailed in this quick guide, the nature of laser printers and multifunction devices implies regular cleaning of components like the paper rollers, scanner glass, and exterior to maintain optimal performance and print quality. The initial removal of packing materials also sets a precedent for handling the device with care.
  • Troubleshooting Resources: The provision of FAQs and troubleshooting guides on the Brother website serves as a valuable maintenance resource, allowing users to diagnose and resolve common issues themselves, reducing the need for professional service.

In summary, the Brother DCP-7090DW/DCP-7190DW/DCP-L2535DW/DCP-L2550DW series offers a robust set of printing, copying, and scanning functionalities with versatile connectivity options. The Quick Setup Guide emphasizes user-friendliness, secure network practices, and access to comprehensive support resources, ensuring a smooth initial experience and long-term usability.
