Overview

This document provides comprehensive instructions for replacing and installing the drum unit in several Brother printer models, specifically the HLL3210CW, HLL3230CDW, HL-L3270CDW, MFCL3710CW, MFCL3750CDW, and MFCL3770CDW. The primary function of these instructions is to guide users through the process of maintaining their printer's imaging system by replacing the drum unit, which is a critical component for print quality.

Function Description

The drum unit in these Brother printers is an essential part of the electrophotographic printing process. It works in conjunction with toner cartridges to transfer toner onto the paper, forming the printed image. Over time, the drum unit wears out, leading to a degradation in print quality, such as streaks, faded prints, or other imperfections. Replacing the drum unit restores the printer's ability to produce high-quality prints. The instructions cover the replacement process for all color drum units (Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow), indicating that these are color laser printers capable of producing full-color documents.

Usage Features

The instructions are designed to be user-friendly, guiding the user step-by-step through the replacement process.

  1. Preparation: The first step emphasizes ensuring the machine is turned on, which is a prerequisite for accessing internal components and for the subsequent reset procedure.
  2. Accessing Internal Components: Users are instructed to open the top cover until it locks in the open position. This provides clear access to the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. A crucial safety warning is provided regarding the heat of internal parts if the machine has just been used, advising users to wait for the machine to cool down to prevent burns.
  3. Identifying the Drum Unit: The printer's display will indicate which color drum unit needs to be replaced, simplifying the identification process for the user.
  4. Removing the Assembly: Users are guided to remove the entire drum unit and toner cartridge assembly for the specified color. A practical tip is included: placing the assembly on a clean, flat surface with disposable paper underneath to catch any spilled or scattered toner, preventing mess and potential damage to surfaces.
  5. Separating Toner from Drum: The instructions detail how to separate the toner cartridge from the old drum unit. This involves pushing down a green lock lever, which is a common mechanism in Brother printers for securing the toner cartridge within the drum unit.
  6. Unpacking the New Drum Unit: Users are reminded to unpack the new drum unit and remove any protective covers, ensuring it's ready for installation.
  7. Reinserting Toner into New Drum: The toner cartridge is then firmly reinserted into the new drum unit until it locks into place, ensuring a secure connection. A warning is given to ensure correct insertion to prevent separation.
  8. Reinstalling the Assembly: The combined new drum unit and toner cartridge assembly is then slid back into the machine. A key instruction here is to match the toner cartridge color to the corresponding color label on the machine, preventing incorrect installation and potential printing issues.
  9. Closing the Cover: After installation, the machine's top cover is closed.

Maintenance Features

Beyond just replacement, the instructions also incorporate important maintenance steps to ensure optimal printer performance and longevity of the new drum unit.

  1. Corona Wire Cleaning: A critical maintenance step is cleaning the corona wire inside the drum unit. This is done by gently sliding a green tab from left to right and right to left several times. This process is repeated for all corona wires. The corona wire is essential for charging the drum, and a dirty wire can lead to poor print quality.
  2. Returning the Green Tab: A specific instruction emphasizes returning the green tab to its "Home" position (indicated by an arrow). The arrow on the tab must be aligned with the arrow on the drum unit. Failure to do so can result in vertical stripes on printed pages, highlighting the importance of this small but crucial detail for print quality.
  3. Drum Counter Reset: After replacing the drum unit, it is essential to reset the drum counter. This step is crucial because the printer tracks the drum unit's usage and will continue to display a "replace drum" message or affect print quality if the counter is not reset. The reset procedure varies slightly depending on the printer model (HLL3210CW/HLL3230CDW vs. HL-L3270CDW/MFCL3710CW/MFCL3750CDW/MFCL3770CDW), but generally involves:
    • Ensuring the machine's cover is closed.
    • Pressing specific buttons (e.g., OK and ▲ simultaneously for some models, or pressing and holding "Toner" on the touchscreen for others).
    • Navigating through menu options to select "Drum."
    • Selecting the color of the drum that was just replaced.
    • Confirming the reset (e.g., by pressing "Reset" or "Yes").

This detailed guide ensures that users can effectively replace their drum units, maintain print quality, and properly reset their printer's internal counters, thereby extending the life and performance of their Brother laser printers. The inclusion of safety warnings and practical tips further enhances the user experience and prevents common errors.
