Why won't my Carlton 2015 Chipper engine turn over?
    • J
      Jacob TaylorAug 14, 2025
If the Carlton Chipper engine won't turn over, several factors could be at play. First, the battery might be dead, requiring a recharge or replacement. Second, the clutch could be engaged, so disengage it. Finally, the cutter drum hood lock pin and safety switch must be correctly positioned to allow the engine to start.

What to do if the Carlton Chipper discharge chute clogs?
    • A
      angelasmithAug 18, 2025
If the discharge chute of your Carlton Chipper is clogging, it could be due to several reasons. First, the engine might be lugging on large material; in this case, maintain engine speed and use the feed control bar to reverse the material if the engine lugs down. Also, check the Auto-Feed Plus setting and adjust it. Second, an obstruction might be present in the discharge chute; any object protruding inside the chute may cause clogging, so replace the discharge chute if necessary. Open air vents on sides of chipper drum. Finally, chipping rotting material can also cause clogging; use care when running this type of material and 'flush' the discharge chute using other material with more substance.

Why do the feed wheels slow down when feeding material into my Carlton 2015?
    • W
      Walter LandryAug 25, 2025
If feeding material causes the feed wheels of your Carlton Chipper to slow down or stop, it could be due to: * Dull knives: Replace the knives. * A worn or dirty relief valve: Clean or replace the valve and reset the pressure. * Excessive wear in the hydraulic pump: Replace the pump. * Feed wheel motor(s) not working properly: Check and replace the motor(s). * Feed wheel springs being too tight: Adjust the springs.

How to fix auto-feed that is not working on Carlton 2015?
    • R
      robertholdenAug 28, 2025
If the Auto-Feed feature on your Carlton Chipper isn't working correctly, it may be due to faulty or broken wiring, so repair or replace the wires (refer to the wiring diagram). Alternatively, the settings might be incorrect; reset them following the instructions in the Auto-Feed/Houston street manual.

Why is the hydraulic pump so loud on my Carlton Chipper?
    • P
      Paul LopezSep 3, 2025
If your Carlton Chipper's hydraulic pump is making excessive noise, it could be cavitating. This might be due to the hydraulic oil viscosity being incorrect for the atmospheric temperature, so contact JP Carlton or your local dealer for the recommended oil type for the situation. Another cause could be that the oil operating temperature is too low; allow the system to warm up. Also, the pump may have excessive wear, so replace the pump.

Why is my Carlton 2015 producing the wrong size chips?
    • J
      joseph33Sep 7, 2025
If the discharged chips from your Carlton Chipper are not the correct size, being either too large or too fine, several factors could be responsible. The knives may have lost their edge, the knife anvil may be worn, or there may be wear in the throat/base area. The knife angle may not be correct, or the material being chipped may be very small, dry, or rotting. To address this: * Do not operate the chipper with dull or mismatched knives. * Rotate, repair, or replace the knives. * Build up outer, non-cutting edges exposed to the chipper knives with weld to maintain the original surface integrity. * Ensure the knives are ground at the correct angle. * Be aware that certain types of material do not produce good chip quality.

What causes Carlton 2015 Chipper bearings to overheat?
    • S
      Susan MaysSep 10, 2025
If the bearings on your Carlton Chipper are overheating, it could be because the bearings are dry, so grease bearings daily using Texaco® Starplex II grease. Alternatively, the bearings may be worn out, requiring replacement. Also, the setscrews on the bearings may not be tight, so tighten them.

Why is the hydraulic oil overheating in my Carlton 2015?
    • F
      fordleeNov 20, 2025
If the hydraulic oil in your Carlton Chipper is overheating, causing it to operate slower than normal, consider these potential causes: * The hydraulic pump may have excessive wear or may not be working properly; check and replace the pump if necessary. * A hose may be crimped or leaking; replace it. * The relief valve may be opening too easily or stuck open; the valve needs to be cleaned or replaced, and the pressure reset. * The feed wheels may be binding; check the feed wheel bearings and lubricate them properly. * The hydraulic tank oil level may be too low, the hydraulic oil may be contaminated, or the hydraulic filter may be dirty; keep the oil tank about 7/8 full, follow the proper maintenance schedule, and change the oil and filter as suggested. * The hydraulic oil vi...

Why aren't the feed wheels turning on my Carlton Chipper?
    • S
      Samuel BairdDec 1, 2025
If one or both feed wheels on your Carlton Chipper aren’t turning or are turning too slowly, several issues could be responsible. The feed wheel motor(s) may not be working properly. The safety switch might not be in the correct position. The relief valve could be opening too easily or be stuck open. The feed wheel valve might be worn and leaking internally. The feed wheel relief pressure could be off. One or more hoses may be crimped or leaking. The hydraulic oil level could be low. The pump may have excessive wear. The feed wheels could be binding. The control lever might be improperly shifting the valve. Finally, the flow divider might be worn or dirty. To troubleshoot: * Reverse hoses at flow divider - if same motor still doesn't turn, motor is probably bad; if other motor is now t...
