COOLING SYSTEM
Description.
The
cooling
system
consists of
the
radiator.- fan,
water
pump,
thermostat
,
water
passages
in
cylinder
block
and
cylinder head,
and
the
necessary connections
and
fittings (fig.
25).
The
function of
the
cooling
system
is
to
keep
the
engine
at
the
most efficient
operating
temperature
under
a
ll
driving
conditions.
The
permane~tly
lubricated
centrifugal
type
water
pump
keeps
the
water
circu
lating;
therefore,
constantly
bringing
cooler
water
to
the
areas
around
the
combustion
and
exhaust
chambers
where
most
heat
is
generated
.
The
fan
assures
a con-
sta
nt
flow of
air
through
the
radiator
and
around
th
e
engine
to aid
in
cooling
th
e
water.
The
th
ermosta
t
restricts
th
e flow of
water
until
the
engine
warms
up
to
normal
operating
t
empera
-
tur
e.
Care.
The
cooling
system
must
be
kept
in
good condition
if
it
is
to
properly
cool
the
engine
under
all
operating
cond
itions.
The
radiator
cap
should
be
removed
and
the
cool
ant
level
checked
frequently
.
If
the
coolant level is low,
water
or
anti-
freeze should be added.
All
models
excep
t
the
Forward
Control
are
equipped
with a
pressure
type
radiator
cap.
NOTE:
The
volume of soluti
on
in
a Chevrolet coolin, system
expands
about one fluart when its
temperature
is changed from
3Z
' to 160°;
therdore,
the
cooling system should
be
left from one
pint
to one
quart
low
if
filled
to
l
d,
especially
when
anU-freeze is
used,
to
prevent
loss of solution
throu,h
th
e radiator overflow pipe.
The
fan
belt
.
tension
should
be
checked
occasion-
ally
an
d,
if
necessary.

justed
to
provide

up

down movement
from
nor-
mal
position
at
a
point
mid-
way
between
fan
and
gener
-
ator
pulleys (fig. 41).
The
system

hould
be
thoroughly
check
ed
for leaks.
Tighten
all ho
se
clamps
occasionally.
