This document is a user guide for the ARRIS SURFboard® SB6183 DOCSIS® 3.0 Cable Modem, providing instructions for installation, setup, and troubleshooting.
Function Description:
The ARRIS SURFboard® SB6183 DOCSIS® 3.0 Cable Modem provides a secure ultra high-speed broadband connection to the Internet for computers and other network-enabled devices in a home or small business network. It acts as a bridge between your cable service provider and your local network, enabling Internet access. The modem supports DOCSIS 3.0 operation, which allows for high-speed Internet access, though availability may depend on the service provider in a specific area.
Important Technical Specifications:
The SB6183 is a DOCSIS 3.0 compliant cable modem.
- Ethernet Port: It features a 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet port, supporting Gigabit (1 Gb) data connections. The Ethernet LED indicates connection speed and data traffic: Green (ON) for 1 Gb connection, Green (Blinking) for 1 Gb data traffic, Amber (ON) for 10/100 Mb connection, and Amber (Blinking) for 10/100 Mb data traffic.
- Coaxial Cable Connector: Standard coaxial cable connector for connecting to the cable service.
- Power Connector: +12VDC Power connector. Users are warned to only use the power supply provided in the box to avoid damage.
- Front Panel LED Icons:
- Power: Green (Solid) indicates proper power connection.
- Receive: Green (Solid) indicates a non-bonded downstream channel connection. Blue (Solid) indicates a high-speed Internet connection with bonded downstream channels (DOCSIS 3.0 operation). Blinking indicates scanning for a downstream channel.
- Send: Green (Solid) indicates a non-bonded upstream channel connection. Blue (Solid) indicates a high-speed Internet connection with bonded upstream channels (DOCSIS 3.0 operation). Blinking indicates scanning for an upstream channel.
- Online: Green (Solid) indicates the startup process is completed. Blinking indicates scanning for an Internet connection.
- System Requirements:
- High-speed Internet access account.
- Web browser access (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari).
- Compatible operating systems: Windows® 10, Windows 8, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), Macintosh® 10.4 or higher, UNIX®, Linux®. Older Windows versions may still function but are not specifically supported.
- Environmental Operating Temperature: The device should not be used in an environment that exceeds 104° F (40° C).
Usage Features:
- Installation: The guide provides step-by-step instructions for connecting the SB6183 to a computer and establishing an Internet connection. This involves connecting a coaxial cable to a wall outlet and the modem, an Ethernet cable from the modem to the computer, and the power cord.
- Automatic Power On: The modem automatically powers on when the power cord is plugged into an electrical wall outlet.
- Internet Activation: Users need to contact their service provider to activate (provision) the SB6183, providing the HFC MAC ID from the modem label. Some service providers may offer automatic activation via a web browser.
- Web Manager: The SB6183 features a web-based manager accessible via
http://192.168.100.1. This interface allows users to:
- View operational status and network configuration settings.
- Monitor network connection status, including downstream and upstream bonded channel connections.
- View product information such as hardware and firmware versions, MAC address, serial number, and system uptime.
- Access an event log that records detected events and activities, useful for troubleshooting.
- View cable modem configuration settings, which are read-only and require service provider authorization for modification.
- Troubleshooting: The guide includes a troubleshooting section with common problems and possible solutions, such as checking power connections, coaxial cable connections, and Ethernet cable connections. It also explains the meaning of the front panel LED icons during startup and normal operation to help diagnose issues.
- Reset and Reboot: The web manager allows users to restore the modem to factory default settings, which deletes current configurations and can take 5 to 30 minutes. It also provides an option to reboot the modem.
- Surfboard Central App: It is recommended to install and set up the cable modem using the Surfboard Central app for detailed setup instructions.
Maintenance Features:
- Cleaning: The device should be wiped with a clean, dry cloth. Cleaning fluids, similar chemicals, or forced air should not be used.
- Environmental Care: Keep the device away from excessive heat, humidity, vibration, and dust. Do not cover the device or block airflow.
- Safety Precautions:
- Read all safety and regulatory information before installation.
- Use only supplied power and interface cables.
- Do not expose the device to rain or moisture, or place liquid-filled objects on it.
- Avoid overloading outlets or extension cords.
- Route power cords carefully to prevent damage.
- Place the device near an electrical outlet for easy access to disconnect the power cord.
- Avoid damaging the device with static by touching the coaxial cable when it's attached to an earth-grounded outlet.
- Install an AC surge protector for protection against lightning and electrical surges.
- Unplug the device and disconnect cables during electrical storms.
- Do not open the device or perform servicing other than specified in the manual; refer servicing to qualified personnel.
- Recycling: Users are advised not to dispose of the product with residential or commercial waste. Local authorities or ARRIS Technical Support (1-877-466-8646) should be contacted for recycling information.
