Overview

This document is a user guide for the ARRIS SURFboard® SB6183 DOCSIS® 3.0 Cable Modem, providing instructions for installation, setup, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

The ARRIS SURFboard® SB6183 DOCSIS® 3.0 Cable Modem provides a secure ultra high-speed broadband connection to the Internet for computers and other network-enabled devices in a home or small business network. It acts as a bridge between your cable service provider and your local network, enabling Internet access. The modem supports DOCSIS 3.0 operation, which allows for high-speed Internet access, though availability may depend on the service provider in a specific area.

Important Technical Specifications:

The SB6183 is a DOCSIS 3.0 compliant cable modem.

  • Ethernet Port: It features a 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet port, supporting Gigabit (1 Gb) data connections. The Ethernet LED indicates connection speed and data traffic: Green (ON) for 1 Gb connection, Green (Blinking) for 1 Gb data traffic, Amber (ON) for 10/100 Mb connection, and Amber (Blinking) for 10/100 Mb data traffic.
  • Coaxial Cable Connector: Standard coaxial cable connector for connecting to the cable service.
  • Power Connector: +12VDC Power connector. Users are warned to only use the power supply provided in the box to avoid damage.
  • Front Panel LED Icons:
    • Power: Green (Solid) indicates proper power connection.
    • Receive: Green (Solid) indicates a non-bonded downstream channel connection. Blue (Solid) indicates a high-speed Internet connection with bonded downstream channels (DOCSIS 3.0 operation). Blinking indicates scanning for a downstream channel.
    • Send: Green (Solid) indicates a non-bonded upstream channel connection. Blue (Solid) indicates a high-speed Internet connection with bonded upstream channels (DOCSIS 3.0 operation). Blinking indicates scanning for an upstream channel.
    • Online: Green (Solid) indicates the startup process is completed. Blinking indicates scanning for an Internet connection.
  • System Requirements:
    • High-speed Internet access account.
    • Web browser access (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari).
    • Compatible operating systems: Windows® 10, Windows 8, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), Macintosh® 10.4 or higher, UNIX®, Linux®. Older Windows versions may still function but are not specifically supported.
  • Environmental Operating Temperature: The device should not be used in an environment that exceeds 104° F (40° C).

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The guide provides step-by-step instructions for connecting the SB6183 to a computer and establishing an Internet connection. This involves connecting a coaxial cable to a wall outlet and the modem, an Ethernet cable from the modem to the computer, and the power cord.
