How to start a Cub Cadet BC490 that won't start?
    • M
      Ms. Jessica HarrisJul 27, 2025
If your Cub Cadet Trimmer engine won't start, several factors could be responsible. First, ensure the fuel tank isn't empty and fill it with fresh fuel if needed. If the fuel is old (over 30 days), drain the tank and add fresh fuel. Also, make sure you've pressed the primer bulb 10 times. A fouled spark plug can also prevent starting, so replace it if necessary. Finally, if the engine is hot, consult the 'IF... THE ENGINE IS HOT' instructions in the Starting and Stopping section.

What to do if the cutting head of my Cub Cadet BC490 will not advance line?
    • R
      Rachel SanchezJul 31, 2025
If the cutting head of your Cub Cadet Trimmer won't advance the line, several issues could be the cause. First, stop the engine and check if the cutting head is bound with grass and clean it. If the cutting head is out of line, refill it with new line. A bound inner reel can also cause this, so clean the inner reel and outer spool. If the cutting head is dirty, open it and remove any welded sections. Also, rewind the line if it's welded or twisted. If not enough line is extended, stop the unit, push the bump knob, and pull the line until 4 inches (102 mm) is outside of the cutting head.

Why is the cutting line of my Cub Cadet Trimmer advancing uncontrollably?
    • S
      Susan SpearsAug 6, 2025
If the cutting line on your Cub Cadet Trimmer advances uncontrollably, it's likely due to oil, cleaner, or lubricant in the cutting head. Clean and thoroughly dry the cutting head to resolve this issue.

Why does my Cub Cadet Trimmer engine lack power or stall?
    • K
      Kendra SilvaAug 11, 2025
If your Cub Cadet Trimmer engine lacks power or stalls, the issue might be due to several reasons. Old fuel (over 30 days) can cause this, so drain the fuel tank and add fresh fuel. A dirty air filter can also lead to power loss, so clean or replace it. Lastly, a fouled spark plug could be the culprit, so consider replacing it.

Why my Cub Cadet Trimmer engine will not idle?
    • W
      William StephensAug 21, 2025
If your Cub Cadet Trimmer engine won't idle, it could be due to a dirty air filter, so you should clean or replace it. Another cause may be old fuel (over 30 days), in which case you should drain the fuel tank and add fresh fuel. Also, the idle speed may be incorrect, so try adjusting it.
