SmartSense Product Manual & Specs
This document outlines the features and specifications for the SmartSense Z Gateway and the SmartSense Z Sensor Node, both manufactured by Digital Instruments.
SmartSense Z Gateway
The SmartSense Z Gateway is a device designed for remote monitoring and sensor network management. It facilitates communication between wireless sensors and a centralized dashboard, allowing for efficient data collection and management.
Function Description:
The Z Gateway provides connectivity for up to 24 wireless sensors, enabling them to transmit data via Cellular (GSM or CDMA) or Ethernet connections. This allows for remote monitoring of various environments, particularly refrigerated spaces, with a completely wire-free installation for the sensors. The gateway acts as a central hub, collecting sensor readings and forwarding them to the SmartSense web-based dashboard for centralized configuration and data visualization.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Dimensions: 6.62" x 3.30" x 1.10"
- Weight: 6.7 ounces (190 grams)
- Network Requirements: GSM or CDMA Cellular Wireless Signal Coverage Area, or Ethernet Connection.
- Battery-backup: 24-48 hours (for power loss or connectivity interruption).
- Device Operating Range (Cellular): 15°C to +35°C (+59°F to +95°F)
- Device Operating Range (Ethernet): -5°C to +40°C (+23°F to +104°F)
- Temperature Sensor Range: -20°C to +60°C (-4°F to +140°F). Optional expanded range of -200°C to +600°C is available with a probe (at additional cost).
- Temperature Error*: ± 0.5°C (± 1.0°F) between -10°C and 60°C (according to sensor manufacturer).
- Power Source: 5V 1A
- Maximum Wireless Sensors: 24 per gateway.
- Internal Battery: 3.7V Li-Ion Rechargeable (Cellular Version Only).
- Communications (Cellular): Quad Band Data Log Format Excel.
- Warranty: 1 Year.
Usage Features:
- Connectivity Options: Users can select either Ethernet or Cellular connectivity for their gateways. Both types can be deployed for redundancy.
- Data Storage: In the event of power loss or connectivity interruption, the gateway can store sensor readings internally. Once connection or power is reestablished, these readings are automatically forwarded to the SmartSense dashboard.
- Self-Installation: Sensors automatically connect to the SmartSense Z Gateway, simplifying the installation process.
- Centralized Configuration: All configurations are managed through a web-based dashboard.
- Status Indicator LEDs: The 4G Z Gateway features four status indicator LEDs that provide visual feedback on the device's functional behavior. These LEDs indicate:
- Status: Last transmission successful (1 blink), last transmission successful but low signal (2 blinks), attempting to transmit wireless sensor reading (3 blinks), attempting to transmit local reading (fast blinking).
- Power: Charging from external power (1 blink), low battery (2 blinks).
- Info: No sensor (1 blink), wireless sensor connected (2 blinks), battery too low to use modem (3 blinks).
- Failure: Failed to communicate with server (1 blink), no signal (2 blinks), device not registered (3 blinks), modem error (fast blinking).
Maintenance Features:
- Power/Refresh Push Button: This button serves two primary maintenance functions:
- Quick Press (when ON): Triggers the gateway to immediately ping the cell network and refresh its online status.
- Long Press (~15 seconds): Shuts down the gateway by turning off all LED lights sequentially. A subsequent quick press will power up and reset the gateway.
SmartSense Z Sensor
The SmartSense Z Sensor is designed for real-time temperature monitoring, enabling companies to track temperatures efficiently for regulatory compliance, quality control, and corrective action.
Function Description:
The Z Sensor allows for continuous monitoring of real-time temperature in various environments such as fridges, freezers, walk-ins, and makelines. It connects wirelessly to the SmartSense Z Gateway. A patented product temperature simulator helps track actual product temperatures. The system is designed for quick deployment and fully automates temperature monitoring.
