Carbon dioxide concentrations
226 Instructions for use Infinity Acute Care System – Infinity M540 SW VG4.n
Overview of CO2 monitoring
The M540 provides fast and continuous main-
stream measurements of carbon dioxide concen-
trations (CO2) in the airway of intubated patients.
The M540 acquires signals from a CO
2 sensor (In-
finity MCable – Mainstream CO2) which fits over a
mainstream airway adapter. The lightweight, reus-
able CO
2 mainstream sensor provides sensitive
and accurate measurements. It uses non-disper-
sive infrared technology to measure CO2 in respira-
tory gases.
CO2 monitoring is available for adult, pediatric, and
neonatal patients.
As respiration gases flow through the airway adapt-
er, the sensor analyzes the expired and inspired air
of the patient by sending a beam of infrared light
through transparent ports in the airway adapter
while detecting changes in CO
2 absorption levels.
Before performing any monitoring functions, refer
to the section "For your safety and that of your pa-
tients" on page 5.
Parameter-specific error messages are listed on
page 282.
Supported parameters

CO2 precautions
WARNING
RRc apnea alarms are NOT reported if the set-
ting RRc apnea time is set to Off in the CO
2
setup page and the RRc alarm feature is deac-
tivated. To generate RRc apnea alarms, acti-
vate the RRc alarms and select a RRc apnea
time.
WARNING
The safety and effectiveness of the respiration
measurement method in the detection of ap-
nea, particularly the apnea of prematurity and
apnea of infancy, has not been established.
WARNING
Patient monitors that measure CO2, anesthet-
ic agents, and/or respiratory mechanics are
not intended to be used as an apnea monitor
and/or recording device. While these products
provide an apnea alarm, that alarm condition
is initiated based on the elapsed time since
the last breath was detected. Clinical diagno-
sis of a true apneic event, however, requires
multiple physiological signals.
WARNING
CO2 alarms do not activate until the first
breath is detected after turning on the monitor
or discharging a patient.
