Overview

The Motorized FlexShade® (Coupled) is a sophisticated window covering system designed for precise light control and privacy in various environments. This system utilizes a series of interconnected roller assemblies, or "panels," that can be operated in unison, making it suitable for covering large or multi-window openings. The "coupled" aspect refers to the retractable coupler shaft mechanism that links these individual fabric/roller assemblies, allowing them to function as a single, synchronized unit.

Function Description

The primary function of the Motorized FlexShade® (Coupled) is to provide automated solar control. It consists of multiple fabric panels mounted on rollers, which are driven by one or more motors. The system can be configured with different types of headboxes—Surface Headbox or Pocket Headbox—or installed without a headbox, depending on the aesthetic and architectural requirements of the installation site. The motorized operation allows for effortless raising and lowering of the shades, which can be controlled via various interfaces, including push-button switches, radio frequency (RF) remotes, or integrated building management systems (BMS) through RS485 or IntelliFlex I/O protocols.

The core of the coupled system is the retractable coupler shaft. This shaft connects adjacent fabric/roller assemblies, ensuring that they move in perfect synchronization. The shaft has three distinct positions: fully extended, intermediate, and fully retracted. This mechanism is crucial during installation and maintenance, allowing individual roller assemblies to be installed or removed while maintaining the integrity of the coupled system.

The system supports both standard roll and reverse roll configurations, offering flexibility in how the fabric presents itself relative to the window. Fascia can be attached to the endcaps to provide a finished look and conceal the roller assemblies, enhancing the aesthetic integration with the room's decor.

Usage Features

The Motorized FlexShade® (Coupled) offers several features that enhance its usability and adaptability:

  • Automated Operation: The motorized functionality eliminates the need for manual adjustment, providing convenience and accessibility, especially for hard-to-reach windows or large installations.
  • Coupled Synchronization: The retractable coupler shaft ensures that all connected fabric panels move together seamlessly, creating a uniform appearance and consistent light control across multiple windows.
  • Multiple Control Options: Users can choose from a range of control methods, including:
    • Push Button Switches: Simple, wall-mounted switches for basic up/down/stop functionality.
    • Radio Frequency (RF) Remotes: Wireless control via handheld remotes or wall-mounted keypads, offering flexibility in placement and operation from anywhere within range.
    • RS485 Integration: For advanced building automation, the system can be integrated into RS485 networks, allowing for centralized control and scheduling.
    • IntelliFlex I/O Integration: Provides further integration capabilities with AV gateways and contact closure interfaces for sophisticated control scenarios.
  • Limit Switch Adjustments: The motors are equipped with limit switches (either push-button or screw-type) that allow installers to precisely set the upper and lower travel limits of the shade. This prevents the fabric from over-rolling or exposing the roller, ensuring smooth and safe operation.
  • Fabric/Roller Assembly Alignment: The system includes a height adjuster mechanism on the operator-end of each fabric roller assembly. This feature allows for fine-tuning the height of individual fabric panels, ensuring that the bottom edges of all panels are perfectly aligned, which is critical for a polished aesthetic, especially in multi-panel installations.
  • Flexible Installation Options: The system can be installed with a Surface Headbox (mounted directly to the wall or ceiling), a Pocket Headbox (recessed into the ceiling), or without a headbox, providing versatility to match different architectural designs and preferences.
  • Fascia Attachment: Fascia pieces can be easily attached to the endcaps, providing a clean, finished look that conceals the internal components of the shade system.
  • Safety Features: The system is designed with safety in mind, including requirements for professional installation, proper testing, and adherence to electrical codes. Limit switches prevent damage to the fabric and motor, and the system emphasizes careful operation to avoid injury.

Maintenance Features

The Motorized FlexShade® (Coupled) is designed for minimal operational maintenance, but some aspects require attention to ensure longevity and proper function:

  • Cleaning:
    • Fabric: Most standard Draper fabrics can be cleaned at the window by vacuuming with a soft brush attachment. They can also be cleaned using a sponge or soft cloth with a mild solution of warm soapy water (a mild dishwashing liquid is recommended).
    • Metal Finish: A clean, dry cloth is recommended for cleaning the metal components.
    • Specialty Fabrics: Specific fabrics like GreenScreen Evolve®, GreenScreen Revive®, and Phifer® SW7000 require cleaning with a dry art sponge.
  • No Operational Lubrication Required: The system is designed to operate without the need for regular lubrication, simplifying maintenance.
  • Field Adjustments for Telescoping: If the shade fabric begins to "telescope" (track unevenly to one side), a simple field adjustment can be made by placing a piece of shimming fabric into the fabric roll on the side opposite to the direction the fabric is drawing.
  • Accessibility for Service: The design allows for the removal of roller assemblies during installation and maintenance, provided adequate clearance is maintained. This facilitates access to internal components for any necessary servicing.
  • Electrical Connections: While designed for reliability, electrical connections should be periodically checked by a qualified electrician to ensure compliance with codes and proper functioning.
  • Limit Switch Verification: Although set during installation, limit switches should be verified periodically, especially after any adjustments or if operational issues arise, to ensure the shade continues to operate within its intended travel limits.
  • Professional Support: In case of difficulties with installation, servicing, or operation, Draper, Inc. provides support, emphasizing the importance of contacting a dealer or Draper directly for assistance. This ensures that any complex issues are handled by trained professionals.
