Chapter 17 Monitoring CO
2
17.1 Overview
The monitor provides the sidestream and mainstream methods for CO
2
monitoring. EDAN EtCO
2
module, Masimo Sidestream CO
2
module and Respironics Sidestream CO
2
module are used for
sidestream measuring; Masimo Mainstream CO
2
module and Respironics Mainstream CO
2
module is
are used for mainstream measuring. Respironics CO
2
module is plug-and-play and the
monitor can automatically identify its sidestream and mainstream modules.
The principle of CO
2
measurement is primarily based on the fact that CO
2
molecule can absorb
4.3μm infrared ray. Absorption intensity is proportional to CO
2
concentration of patient sample,
the CO
2
concentration will compute according to the detecting CO
2
absorption intensity of patient
sample.
Sidestream measurement takes a sample of the respiratory gas with a constant sample flow
from the patient’s airway and analyzes it with a CO
2
sensor. You can measure Sidestream
CO
2
using the monitor’s built-in CO
2
measurement. Respiration rate is calculated by
measuring the time interval between detected breaths.
Mainstream measurement uses a CO
2
sensor attached to an airway adapter directly inserted
into the patient’s breathing system.

Safety Information
WARNING
1 Do not use the device in the environment with flammable anesthetic gas.
2 The device should be used by trained and qualified medical personnel authorized by
EDAN.
3 Nitrous oxide, elevated levels of oxygen, helium, xenon, halogenated hydrocarbons,
and barometric pressure can influence the CO
2
measurement.
4 The monitor will be damaged if any pipeline from the CO
2
module’s air tube /the air
inlet /the air outlet is plugged by water or other materials.
5 The accuracy of the CO
2
measurement will be affected by the following reasons: the
airway was highly obstructed; the leakage of air way connection or quick variation of
environment temperature.
6 Follow precautions for electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electromagnetic interference
(EMI) to and from other equipment.
7 Do not place the sensor cables or tubing in any manner that may cause entanglement
or strangulation.
8 When using mechanical ventilation, gas compensation should be well set.
Inappropriate setting may cause incorrect measurement result.
