Do you have a question about the ELGA PURELAB UHQ II and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The PURELAB UHQ II & PS is a water purification system designed to produce ultra-pure water for laboratory and industrial applications. It combines several purification technologies, including Reverse Osmosis (RO), Organic Adsorption, Ion Exchange, Ultra-microfiltration, and Photo-oxidation. The system is available in two main models: PURELAB UHQ II and PURELAB UHQ PS, with slight variations in their specifications and features.

Function Description

The PURELAB UHQ II & PS system purifies water through a multi-stage process. Initially, feed water passes through a pre-treatment stage, followed by Reverse Osmosis (RO) to remove a significant portion of impurities. The water then goes through an ion exchange cartridge for further deionization, an organic adsorption cartridge, and an ultra-microfiltration cartridge to remove particulates and microorganisms. A UV lamp is incorporated for photo-oxidation and sterilization. The system includes a built-in reservoir for storing purified water, and a dispense pen allows for controlled dispensing of ultra-pure water. The PURELAB UHQ PS model is specifically designed for pre-treated RO or DI water, while the UHQ II handles raw water.

Usage Features

The PURELAB UHQ II & PS systems are designed for user-friendly operation with clear indicators and controls.

  • Dispense Pen: Allows for controlled and precise dispensing of ultra-pure water.
  • Front Panel Controls: The "Fill" button initiates the filling process, with a RED fill light illuminating during filling and an amber "Process" light indicating purification.
  • Reservoir Level Control: The system automatically manages the reservoir water level.
  • Recirculation: The system recirculates water within the unit to maintain purity, with an "intermittent standby" mode that activates recirculation for 10 minutes every 60 minutes when the process function switches off.
  • Status Indicators: Lights on the front panel indicate the system's operational status, such as "intermittent standby" and "ready" light for purified water.
  • Water Quality Monitoring: The DI quality sensor with temperature compensation ensures consistent product water quality.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of the PURELAB UHQ II & PS system.

  • Cartridge Replacement: The system utilizes several consumable cartridges that require periodic replacement. These include:
    • UHQ1 - Adsorption Cartridge (Max. Service Life: 3 months, Max. Shelf Life: 2 years)
    • UHQ2 - Ion Exchange Cartridge (Max. Service Life: 3 months, Max. Shelf Life: 2 years)
    • UHQ4 - Composite Vent Filter (Max. Service Life: 4 months, Max. Shelf Life: 2 years)
    • UHQ7 - Ultra Microfiltration Cartridge (Max. Service Life: 4 months, Max. Shelf Life: 2 years)
    • UHQ5 - RO Cartridge (Max. Service Life: 12 months, Max. Shelf Life: 5 years)
    • UHQ6 - UV Lamp Tube (Max. Service Life: 12 months, Max. Shelf Life: 5 years)
    • UHQ1 and UHQ2 must always be changed together as a pair, ordered as a "PACK A".
  • Sanitization Procedure: A detailed sanitization procedure is outlined to maintain the bacterial quality of the system. This involves using CT3 chlorine tablets or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and flushing the system. The process includes disconnecting tubing, filling the reservoir with sanitizing solution, and running the process cycle.
  • Line Cell Calibration: The line cell requires calibration to ensure accurate readings. This involves adjusting potentiometers on the current UHQ power supply and control PCB. The procedure includes removing covers, accessing the PCB, and adjusting P2, P3, P4, and P5 potentiometers based on display readings.
  • Level Control Calibration: The level control assembly also requires calibration to ensure correct water level management within the tank. This involves adjusting the level control assembly to ensure the maximum water level is approximately 5 mm from the inside edge of the top of the tank.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive troubleshooting section helps diagnose and resolve common issues, such as unable to attain 18 MΩ.cm, no flow from dispense pen, and reservoir not filling or overfilling. This guide provides potential causes and corresponding actions, including replacing cartridges, cleaning the line cell, calibration, and bleeding the UMF (UHQ7) from the bleed valve.
  • Routine Servicing: Regular servicing includes checking operation of level controls, inspecting and cleaning the line cell, and checking calibration. The UV lamp must be disabled before switching power on with the front panel removed.
  • Parts List: A detailed parts list is provided, including part numbers and quantities per unit for various components, categorized by voltage (230 volt, 115 volt, 100 volt units).
  • Assembly Diagrams: Exploded views of key assemblies such as the UV Housing, Line Cell and UHQ7, Dispense Pen, Recirculation Pump, Tank Assembly, Main Frame, Inlet Outlet Assembly, and Electronics Compartment are provided to aid in maintenance and part replacement.

Safety Instructions

The manual emphasizes several safety precautions:

  • Electrical Safety: The ON/OFF switch is located at the rear of the unit. The mains power lead is located immediately adjacent to the ON/OFF switch and should be physically removed before working on any electrical components. The appliance must be earthed.
  • Pressure Safety: The mains feed water supply should be released prior to removal of any cartridges or disturbance of any other hydraulic components.
  • UV Light: The unit should never be operated with the front cover removed as the operator would be exposed to short wavelength UV light.
  • Chemicals: Cleaning using specialist chemicals is recommended. Safety data sheets conforming to COSHH regulations should be supplied with any chemicals.
  • Reservoir Filling: Care must always be taken when filling the reservoir through the top cap to ensure it is not overfilled. Overfilling will result in water flowing down the vent tube, causing subsequent damage to the UHQ4 composite vent filter.
  • Recirculation Switch: The RECIRC switch SW1 must always be left in the INT RECIRC position. Continuous recirculation will result in excessive temperature build up in the ultra pure water and a short pump life.
