Overview

The Engcon Compactor is a specialized attachment designed for the compaction of soil, intended for use with excavators and backhoe loaders. This user manual provides comprehensive information on its functions, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The compactor operates by creating vibrations through a hydraulic motor acting on an eccentric shaft, which in turn vibrates a plate. This vibrating plate is connected to the main body of the compactor via vibration dampers, ensuring effective soil compaction. For safety, two chains are fitted between the vibrating plate and the frame. The tool features a bolt-on gate/attachment point, allowing for easy interchangeability of attachment points as needed. Soil compaction is achieved through the compactor's floating motion on top of the ground; pressing the compactor against the soil with the base machine does not increase compaction and instead increases wear on the compactor, reducing its service life.

Important Technical Specifications

The Engcon Compactor is available in several models: PP3200, PP350, PP600, and PP950. Key technical data for these models are as follows:

  • Compaction Force:

    • PP350: 35.04 x 24.41 x 17.72 inches
    • PP600: 41.34 x 28.35 x 20.47 inches
    • PP950: 50 x 35.43 x 23.62 inches

The compactor is designed and manufactured by Engcon, adhering to EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and standards SS-EN ISO 12100:2010, SS-EN 474-1:2006+A5:2018, and SS-EN 474-5:2006+A3:2013.

Usage Features

The Engcon Compactor is designed for ease of use and efficiency. Installation involves connecting the tool to the base machine's machine hitch or tiltrotator and then connecting the hydraulic hoses to the base machine's hydraulic outlets. It is crucial to ensure the hydraulic system is de-pressurized before any work on the system. The compactor should be placed on the ground, and the extra hydraulics connected to initiate vibration. During operation, the compactor should "float" over the area to be compacted. After use, the extra hydraulics are disconnected, the compactor is raised, and any soil or rocks between the compactor plate and body are emptied.

A key feature is the optional EC-Oil system, Engcon's automatic oil connection system, which allows for efficient tool changes without the operator needing to leave the cab. This fully hydraulic system is designed for maximum reliability in harsh environments and handles tool connections under full system pressure. The PP3200 model can also be equipped with levelling blades and extension plates for enhanced versatility.

Safety is paramount, with warnings against exceeding tipping load limits, as the product's weight and increased reach can impair stability. Operators are reminded to be aware of moving parts to prevent crush injuries and never to stand under a raised tool. It is also critical to ensure the base machine's specified maximum capacity is not exceeded to prevent damage.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the compactor's longevity and safe operation.

  • Daily Inspections: Before each working day, operators must check for cracks or damage, ensure rubber dampers are intact, verify warning decals are legible and in place, confirm proper attachment to the quick coupler/machine coupler, check for hydraulic leaks (replacing worn or damaged hoses), and ensure the product is clean, especially hydraulic components. The latches of the quick coupler must protrude as specified, and the tool should only be used if locking is correctly completed.
  • Lubrication: The compactor requires lubrication according to a schedule of every 40 operating hours.
  • Oil Change: The generator oil should be changed annually using 10w/30 mineral oil, with a quantity of 0.05 gallons.
  • Special Maintenance (EC-Oil): For models equipped with EC-Oil, oil connections, electrical connectors, grease connections, and dirt guards must be cleaned before and after use to prevent leakage and safeguard EC-Oil function. If leakage persists after cleaning, face seal replacement is recommended. Electrical connectors should be cleaned daily and sprayed with water repellent. During transport and extended layups, the protection supplied on the EC-Oil block should be used.
  • Tightening Torque: Specific tightening torques are provided for the top bracket and EC-Oil hydraulic connectors. For the top bracket (M16, quality 8.8), the torque is 145 lb-ft for all models (PP3200, PP350, PP600, PP950). For ECO45/50/60/70 hydraulic connectors, the torque is 44 lb-ft.
  • General Maintenance Warnings: The manual emphasizes the importance of following manufacturer recommendations for service and maintenance to prevent defects. Only hoses with press couplings should be used when changing hoses, and screw connections are not permitted. Welding is strictly forbidden without Engcon's permission due to potential negative impacts on safety and risk of damage. Operators are also advised to review safety data sheets for hydraulic oil and grease to understand personal and environmental risks.

The Engcon Compactor is a robust and efficient tool designed for demanding compaction tasks, with a strong emphasis on operational safety and ease of maintenance.
