4.7 Steering System
Electronic Steering
Your boat is equipped with an electronic steering
system that provides precise and responsive steer-
ing. The system is 100% electronic and there are
no mechanical connections between the steering
wheel and the engine.
For safety and improved tight quarter maneuver-
ing, the controlling software on most systems
senses engine speed and adjusts maximum steer-
ing angle and steering wheel resistance to preset
limits as engine speed increases or decreases.
Steering angles and steering wheel resistance at
specic engine speeds are programed into the
system at the factory and are not adjustable.
Should a fault in the steering system occur, the
controlling software will sense the failure, limit
engine RPM as a safety precaution and alert the
operator.
Each steering control system has emergency pro-
cedures that are specic to the steering system
and type of failure. It is very important to follow
the correct procedure to avoid damage to the boat
if a steering system failure occurs.
Refer to the engine or steering system owner’s
manuals for specic information on the operation,
maintenance and emergency procedures for the
steering system installed in your boat.
Tilt Steering Wheel
The steering wheel can be tilted to ve dierent
positions by activating the tilt lock lever located
on the bottom of the helm station. When the
lever is released, it automatically locks the steer-
ing wheel at or close to that angle. Refer to the
steering manufacturer owner’s manual for specic
information on the steering system.
Hydraulic Steering Cylinder Single outboard
engines with hydraulic steering are equipped with
one hydraulic steering cylinder mounted on the
engine that is connected directly to the engine
tiller arm.
