Overview

The FARO PanoCam is an accessory designed to integrate panoramic image capture with FARO Focus S and Focus Plus laser scanners. This device enhances the functionality of the laser scanner by automatically adding panoramic images to scan projects, which can then be processed within FARO SCENE software.

Function Description:

The PanoCam allows users to easily incorporate high-quality panoramic images into their 3D laser scan projects. Once configured and calibrated with a FARO Focus Laser Scanner, the PanoCam automatically captures images as part of the normal scan process. These images are then transferred from the camera's storage to the laser scanner upon completion of each scan and stored in a "PanoCam" subfolder within the scan project. This integration streamlines the workflow for creating comprehensive 3D models with rich visual data, enabling better context and color information for the scanned environments.

Important Technical Specifications:

The PanoCam system utilizes a Ricoh Theta Z1 Camera, which offers several key specifications:

  • Camera Resolution: 23 MP (6720 x 3360 pixels), providing high-detail panoramic images.
  • Video Capability: 4K video (3840 x 1920 pixels) at 29.97 frames per second (f/sec.), allowing for video capture in addition to still images.
  • Storage: Sufficient internal storage for approximately 350 RAW+ pictures.
  • Connectivity: Equipped with USB 3.0, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth for data transfer and remote control.
  • Operating Temperature: Designed to operate within a range of 0°C to 40°C.
  • Storage Temperature: Can be stored in temperatures ranging from -20°C to 60°C.
  • Compatibility: The PanoCam is specifically compatible with FARO Focus S and Focus Plus models. It requires Focus Firmware version 6.8 or greater and SCENE 2021.0 or later for full functionality.

Usage Features:

  • Seamless Integration: The PanoCam is designed for straightforward integration with the Focus scanner. Users can configure the PanoCam via the Focus scanner's interface by navigating to "Parameters > Color Settings > Panorama Camera."
  • Automated Image Capture: Once enabled and calibrated, the PanoCam automatically captures panoramic images during the scanning process, eliminating the need for separate manual image capture.
  • Adjustable Image Count: Users can set the "Number of Images" to be captured per scan, typically recommending a value of "2" to balance image quality with processing times and file sizes. Higher values can be used for more detailed color information at the expense of increased processing load.
  • Calibration Routine: A critical usage feature is the required calibration process after installation. This routine automatically performs a 1/5 / 2x quality scan, captures one PanoCam picture, and an internal camera color capture with even weighted metering. This ensures proper color registration and overlay.
  • Recommended Calibration Environment: For optimal calibration, it is advised to perform the calibration scan in an indoor environment (e.g., office, room) with walls a few meters from the scanner. The environment should have visible objects or patterns well distributed around the floor, walls, and ceiling. Plain white walls, dark environments, and moving objects should be avoided during calibration.
  • Error Handling: The system provides clear error messages, such as "Please connect a panorama camera and ensure that it is switched on," to guide users in troubleshooting connectivity issues.
  • Mounting: The PanoCam requires a dedicated Panocam Mount for secure attachment to the Focus scanner. A 3mm Allen Key is needed for installation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Firmware Updates: It is recommended to update the Ricoh Theta Z1 camera to the latest firmware as a general preparation step to ensure optimal performance and compatibility.
  • Calibration Repetition: Calibration should be repeated if the camera or its mount has been removed from the scanner, subjected to impacts, or experienced extreme temperature changes. Periodic calibration is also recommended, or if color overlay errors are detected in processed scans.
  • Safe Handling: Users are advised to always power OFF both the PanoCam and the Focus scanner when installing or removing the PanoCam to prevent damage.
  • Storage and Transport: The PanoCam should always be removed from the Focus Scanner before shipping or storage in its transport case to protect both devices.
  • Environmental Considerations: The PanoCam is not IP (Ingress Protection) rated, meaning it is not designed to withstand water or dust ingress. Therefore, it is not recommended for use in wet environments to prevent damage.
