Overview

The Fluke Networks NX2 Pocket Toner is a versatile diagnostic tool designed for quick and efficient testing of various cable types. It is primarily used to check for continuity, short circuits, AC and DC voltage, and 50 Ω or 75 Ω termination in cables. The device comes with standard F-type connectors and can be expanded with optional adapters for twisted pair, coaxial, and two-wire radial cables. An optional feature, the Dial Tone Detective™, allows for rapid detection of dial tone presence and correct wire polarity in telephone jacks.

Function Description:

The NX2 Pocket Toner operates by connecting to a cable and displaying the line's condition on its integrated display. For unterminated cables, an adapter is connected to an ID cap or a toner cap at the far end of the cable, while the main unit with its adapter is connected to the near end. Once powered on, the device analyzes the cable and provides visual feedback.

The display uses specific indicators:

  • A blinking dash signifies an open circuit.
  • A blinking "S" indicates a short circuit.
  • A "C" denotes continuity with either the toner cap or a 50 Ω or 75 Ω terminator.
  • A solid display indicates the presence of DC voltage (>6 V dc).
  • A blinking display indicates the presence of AC voltage (>6 V ac).

When continuity is established with the main unit, the toner cap emits a loud, steady tone. If the line condition changes during testing, the main unit emits a loud, brief tone to alert the user.

The optional Dial Tone Detective™ is used by connecting it to a telephone jack. If a dial tone is present, a green LED illuminates. If the jack is reverse-wired, a red LED will light up. To hear an audible tone when a dial tone is present, the Speed 81 coupler can be used to connect the toner cap to the Dial Tone Detective™.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Approximate distance: 300 m (1,000 ft)
  • Output voltage in continuity mode: 3.6 Vdc (with a new battery)
  • Toner frequency: Main unit: 2.7 kHz; Toner cap: 2.3 kHz
  • Maximum input voltage: 30 Vac, 42 Vpk, or 60 Vdc
  • Battery type: 1.5 V AAA alkaline
  • Auto shut-off: 10 minutes (if line condition does not change)
  • Operating temperature: -20 °C to +65 °C
  • Storage temperature: -30 °C to +70 °C
  • Altitude: 3,000 m (10,000 ft) maximum
  • Relative humidity: 5% to 95% (non-condensing)

  • Pollution degree: 2

Usage Features:

The NX2 Pocket Toner is designed for ease of use with its clear display and audible tones. The "Speed 81 coupler" is an F-type coupler that facilitates faster connections, enhancing efficiency during testing. The device incorporates an auto shut-off feature, which powers down the main unit after 10 minutes of inactivity (i.e., no change in line condition), conserving battery life.

Maintenance Features:

Maintenance of the NX2 Pocket Toner is straightforward and primarily focuses on battery replacement and cleaning.

  • Battery Replacement: The device uses a 1.5 V AAA alkaline battery. To replace it, the battery cap is removed, and the old battery is exchanged for a new one. It is recommended to remove the battery if the toner will not be used for an extended period to prevent battery drain and potential damage.
  • Cleaning: The case of the toner should be cleaned with a soft cloth moistened with water or a weak soap solution. Solvents or abrasive materials should not be used to prevent damage to the display or the case.
  • General Maintenance Warnings: Users are advised not to open the case except for battery replacement, as internal parts are not user-serviceable. Only replacement parts approved by Fluke Networks should be used to maintain warranty validity and ensure safe operation. All repairs and servicing should be performed by Fluke Networks-approved service centers.

Safety Information:

Several warnings are provided to ensure safe operation and prevent fire, electric shock, personal injury, or damage to the toner:

  • Voltage Limits: Do not connect the toner to more than 30 Vac, 42 Vpk, or 60 Vdc.
  • Telecommunication Circuits: The equipment lacks insulation against on-hook, dial tone, ring, or transient voltages found in active telecommunication circuits. Therefore, it should not be used on active circuits where these voltages may exist. Disconnect circuits at the source before connecting the equipment.
  • Environmental Conditions: Do not use the device if it is wet or damp.
  • Intended Use: The protection provided by the product may be impaired if it is used in a manner not specified in the manual.
  • Public Communications Networks: Do not connect this equipment to public communications networks, such as telephone systems.
  • Disposal: Products containing circuit boards should not be disposed of in general waste containers. Refer to local regulations for proper disposal procedures.

The NX2 Pocket Toner is compliant with European (CE) and Canadian (CSA C22.2 No. 61010.1.04) standards and conforms to relevant Australian standards.
