The Fluke Networks NX8 Pocket Toner is a versatile tool designed for quickly testing cable continuity, short circuits, AC and DC voltage, and 50 Ω or 75 Ω termination. It is equipped with standard F-type connectors and can be expanded with optional adapters for twisted pair, coaxial, and two-wire radial cables. An optional Dial Tone Detective™ feature allows for quick detection of dial tones and verification of wire polarity in telephone jacks.
The NX8 Pocket Toner's primary function is to diagnose cable conditions. It can identify open circuits, short circuits, and continuity with a toner cap or specific terminators (50 Ω or 75 Ω). The device also detects the presence of AC voltage (blinking display) and DC voltage (solid display) above 6 V. When used with ID caps, it can identify continuity with up to eight different caps, indicated by numbers 1 through 8 on the display. The optional Dial Tone Detective™ accessory helps determine if a dial tone is present in a telephone jack (indicated by a green LED) and if the jack is reverse-wired (indicated by a red LED). The toner cap emits a loud, steady tone when it has continuity with the main unit, and a loud, brief tone if the line condition changes.
To use the toner for unterminated cables, first connect the correct adapter to an ID cap or the toner cap, then connect the cap to the far end of the cable. Next, connect the correct adapter to the main unit. Turn on the main unit and connect it to the near end of the cable. The display will then show the cable's condition:
For detecting dial tones, connect the optional Dial Tone Detective™ to a telephone jack. To hear a tone when a dial tone is present, use the Speed 81 coupler to connect the toner cap to the Dial Tone Detective™. A green LED indicates a dial tone is present, while a red LED indicates a reverse-wired jack. The device features an auto shut-off function that turns off the main unit after 10 minutes if the line condition remains unchanged, helping to conserve battery life.
The NX8 Pocket Toner is designed for straightforward maintenance. To replace the battery, open the case and insert a 1.5 V AAA alkaline battery. It is recommended to remove the battery if the toner will not be used for a long period to extend battery life. For cleaning, the case should be wiped with a soft cloth moistened with water or a weak soap solution; solvents or abrasive materials should not be used to prevent damage to the display or case. Users are advised not to open the case for any other reason, as parts inside are not user-repairable or replaceable. Only replacement parts approved by Fluke Networks should be used, and service should be performed by approved Fluke Networks service centers to maintain warranty validity and ensure safe operation.
Users must adhere to safety guidelines to prevent fire, electric shock, or personal injury. The toner should not be connected to more than 30 Vac, 42 Vpk, or 60 Vdc. The equipment lacks insulation against on-hook, dial tone, ring, or transient voltages, which can be hazardous on active telecommunication circuits. Therefore, it should not be used on active circuits where these voltages may exist; circuits should be disconnected at the source before connecting the equipment. The device is not suitable for use in damp or wet environments. Protection may be impaired if the product is used in a manner not specified in the manual. The device should not be connected to public communications networks, such as telephone systems. Products containing circuit boards should be disposed of according to local regulations, not in waste containers.
