MAKE THE POINT: Adaptive Cruise Control
When describing adaptive cruise control, share this
scenario: A person driving in the right lane of a two-
lane expressway has set their cruise control to the
speed limit. They approach a vehicle traveling slightly
under the speed limit. If they’re unable to pass the
slower vehicle, the driver will have to manually
intervene to slow their vehicle (e.g., braking, changing
cruise control setting, etc.).
Now if their vehicle is equipped with adaptive cruise
control, their vehicle will automatically slow to
match the leading vehicle’s speed at the desired gap
distance. If the slower vehicle speeds up, or if the left
lane is accessible and the driver changes lanes to
pass, the adaptive cruise control system will sense
that there’s no vehicle ahead and will automatically
return to the previously set speed.
