IIHS Tests
The 2012Tauruswasnameda“TopSafetyPick”and
received the highest possible rating in each of the
following tests performed by the Insurance Institute for
Highway Safety (IIHS).
Frontal Offset Test
• Vehicleimpactsafixedbarrierat40mph.Only
40 percent of the vehicle’s front surface makes
contact with the barrier
Side Impact Test
• A3300-lb.barriermovingat31mphstrikestheside
of a stationary vehicle
Roof Strength Test
• Anewtestingprocedureimplementedincalendar
year 2010
• Ametalplateispushedagainstthecornerofthe
vehicle roof at constant speed
• Themaximumforcesustainedbytheroofbefore5"of
crush is measured, and then compared to the vehicle
weight to determine a strength-to-weight ratio
Rear Impact Test
• Vehicle’sfrontseatismountedonaplatform,which
is accelerated forward
• Thissimulatesthestationaryvehiclebeinghitfrom
behind and tests for whiplash injury
