NHTSA Ratings
• TheNationalHighwayTrafficSafetyAdministration
(NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP)
crash test ratings changed beginning with 2011 model
year vehicles
• Morestringentfrontalandsidecrashtestsand
measuring methods are expected to result in lower
crash ratings forallvehiclesfromallmanufacturers,
even if the vehicle earned top crash test scores in the
older 2010 model year ratings
NHTSA rollover testing methods are unchanged, so
the ratings from previous testing remain unchanged
• Once 2012 model year ratings are published, it’s
important to remember vehicles with lower star
ratings are just as safe as they were before – the
vehicles are not changing; the way the crash testing is
conducted and measured is what changed

Frontal Crash Test Passenger dummy now
represents a small female
(less than 5% of the female
population) or large child
instead of a midsize male.
Side-Impact Test Second-row dummy now
represents a small female
(less than 5% of the female
population) or large child

A new pole test with a small
female driver, designed to
