Overview

The Freedom Won eTower is a modular lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) energy storage system designed for small residential and light commercial applications. It offers a scalable solution, allowing for initial installations of 5kWh that can be expanded in 5kWh increments up to 20kWh. The system is manufactured by Freedom Won (Pty) Ltd in South Africa.

Function Description:

The eTower modules are designed to store energy and provide it to compatible inverters and system controllers. They feature an integrated Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors and controls various parameters to ensure safe and efficient operation. The BMS can communicate with external devices via CAN Bus or RS485 interfaces, allowing for intelligent control of charging and discharging processes. The system is primarily designed for easy stacking into a tower configuration using included plastic pedestals, but it can also be rack-mounted or wall-mounted.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Battery Technology: Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)
  • Nominal Voltage: 52V (suitable for 48V inverters, min 47V, max 56V)
  • Energy Capacity (per module): 5 kWh (Total), 4 kWh (80% DoD), 4.5 kWh (90% DoD)
  • Current Capacity (per module): 100 Ah
  • Max/Cont. Charge Current (per module): 80A / 70A
  • Max/Cont. Charge Power (per module): 4.2 kW / 3.6 kW
  • Max/Cont. Discharge Current (per module): 100A / 90A
  • Max/Cont. Discharge Power (per module): 5.2 kW / 4.7 kW
  • Max Recommended Inverter Total Rated Power (cont.): 5 kVA (for 1 module), 8 kVA (for 2 modules), 12 kVA (for 3 modules), 15 kVA (for 4 modules)
  • Combined Weight: 45 kg (1 module), 90 kg (2 modules), 135 kg (3 modules), 180 kg (4 modules)
  • Dimensions (single unit with pedestal): 247mm (H) x 460mm (W) x 463mm (D)
  • DC Leads: 35mm² single core, 1.8m long, M6 terminal lugs (red for positive, black for negative)
  • Circuit Breaker: 125A DC rated
  • Communication Interfaces: RS232 (RJ11), RS485 (RJ45 x 2 for inter-module, RJ45 x 1 for inverter), CAN Bus (RJ45 x 1 for inverter), Digital Output Dry Contacts (DO1, DO2)
  • IP Rating: IP20
  • Operating Temperature (storage/transport): -20°C to 45°C (temporary), 0°C to 30°C (extended)
  • Operating Temperature (charging): Above 0°C
  • Warranty: 10 years limited warranty or 4,000 cycles (at 70% DoD average)
  • Expected Product Life: Approximately 15 years (daily cycling, 70% DoD average), up to 20 years (occasional cycling)

Usage Features:

  • Modular Design: Allows for easy expansion of storage capacity in 5kWh increments up to 20kWh.
  • Stackable Configuration: Modules can be stacked into a tower using included plastic pedestals, simplifying installation.
  • Rack Mountable: Compatible with standard 19" racks using optional brackets.
  • Carrying Handles: Two handles on the front face of each module facilitate safe handling and lifting.
  • State of Charge (SoC) Indication: Six green LEDs provide a visual indication of the battery's capacity from 0% to 100%.
  • Run Indication LED: A green LED illuminates when the BMS is active and operating normally.
  • Warning LED: A red LED indicates an active alarm or fault, such as over-voltage or low SoC.
  • Address Dip Switches: A block of four binary dip switches allows for setting a unique address for each module (1 to 15), crucial for proper communication in parallel systems. The module connected to the inverter should be set to address 01.
  • Reset Button: Used to "wake up" the BMS from a dormant state or clear alarms/faults by pressing for approximately five seconds.
  • Circuit Breaker: A 125A DC rated circuit breaker provides overcurrent and short circuit protection and serves as the main ON/OFF switch for the module.
  • Inter-module Communication: RS485 bus with standard Ethernet cables (RJ45) allows modules to "daisy chain" for data exchange.
  • Inverter Communication: Dedicated RJ45 ports for CAN Bus and RS485 interfaces enable communication with compatible inverters and system controllers. Cables for Victron, "Type 1" CAN Bus inverters (Sunsynk, Growatt, Solis, Goodwe), and Voltronic/Axpert RS485 inverters are included.
  • Digital Output Dry Contacts (DCT): Two normally closed, potential-free contacts (DO1 and DO2) can be used to control external relays based on fault protection or low SoC alarms.
  • Earthing Point: Provided for grounding module casings when installed in a cabinet.
  • Pre-charge Functionality: For inverters with high inrush current, pre-charging the DC bus is recommended before closing the battery breaker.

Maintenance Features:

  • Sealed Unit: The eTower is sealed with a tamper-proof warranty seal. Opening the unit by unauthorized personnel voids the warranty.
  • Firmware Updates: The RS232 interface (RJ11) is used by Freedom Won technicians or authorized service centers for firmware updates, settings adjustments, real-time data monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a troubleshooting guide to help resolve common issues.
  • BMS Fault Clearing: The reset button can be used to clear alarms or faults and restore normal operation.
  • Automatic BMS Shutdown: If inactive, the BMS will automatically shut down after 24 hours.
  • Cell Balancing: The BMS actively balances cell voltages to prevent excessive spread and ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Charge Current Limit: The eTower has an automatic charge limit feature that reduces current to 20A if it exceeds 85A for too long, protecting the battery. This condition clears when the battery is fully charged.
