Overview

The Friedman IR-X is a dual-tube, high-voltage, multi-channel, and multi-function preamp designed for guitarists seeking a versatile and authentic tube tone. It serves as a comprehensive solution for both live performances and studio recording sessions, offering a wide array of features that cater to diverse playing styles and technical requirements.

Function Description

At its core, the IR-X functions as an all-tube, high-voltage preamp, utilizing two 12AX7 preamp tubes to deliver a rich, harmonically detailed sound. It features two independent channels, each with its own character and controls. Channel 1 is designed to produce tones ranging from clean to gritty, ideal for blues, classic rock, and lighter overdrive sounds. Channel 2, on the other hand, specializes in high-gain drive, suitable for heavy rock and metal genres. Both channels include a boost function, allowing players to increase volume and gain for solos or heavier sections.

A significant feature of the IR-X is its integrated power amp simulation and low-latency Impulse Response (IR) cabinet simulation. This allows the unit to function as a complete cab-less amplifier replacement, providing a direct recording and live solution without the need for a physical amplifier or speaker cabinet. The power amp simulation includes software-editable Presence and Thump controls, offering fine-tuning of the simulated power amp characteristics for each channel. The IR cabinet simulation is bypassable, giving users the flexibility to use external IR loaders if desired. The unit comes pre-loaded with 12 free Friedman IRs, and users can also load their own custom IRs.

The IR-X is MIDI programmable, supporting up to 128 user-customizable presets. Each preset can store a comprehensive set of parameters, including channel selection, boost status (on/off), FX loop status (active/bypass), per-channel IR/CAB simulation settings, and per-channel Presence and Thump settings (the latter accessible via software). This extensive programmability makes the IR-X a powerful tool for integrating into complex digitally controlled rigs.

Usage Features

The IR-X offers multiple ways to integrate into a guitarist's setup:

  1. Stand-alone Cab-less Amplifier Replacement: For direct recording or live performances, the IR-X can be connected directly to a recording interface, monitors, or a PA system via its DI balanced output. This eliminates the need for an amplifier head or speaker cabinet, providing a consistent Friedman tone in any environment. It also includes a headphone output for silent practice.

  2. Guitar Preamp with External Amplifier: The IR-X can be used as a full-featured guitar preamp by connecting its output into the effects loop return of an amplifier head or combo, or into a stand-alone power amp and speaker cabinet. This allows players to utilize the IR-X's tube preamp tone with their preferred power amp and speaker setup.

  3. Power Amp and IR Cabinet Simulator: The unit can also function as an IR cabinet and amp simulator for external preamps. By connecting any external preamp into the RETURN of the IR-X, users can leverage its power amp and IR cabinet simulations to shape their tone.

  4. Effects Loop Integration: The IR-X features an ultra-transparent series FX loop, which is bypassable. This allows users to integrate their favorite external effects pedals. If using external effects with both the IR-X and an external amp, the IR-X SEND can be connected to the input of the first pedal, and the output of the last pedal can be split to both the IR-X RETURN and the external power amp return/input.

Front Panel Controls:

The front panel provides intuitive controls for shaping the tone:

Maintenance Features

The IR-X is designed for reliability and ease of maintenance, with specific guidelines to ensure its longevity and safe operation.

General Safety and Care:

  • Read Instructions: Users are advised to thoroughly read the instruction manual for essential safety information and operating procedures.
  • Moisture and Heat: The device should not be exposed to water or moisture and should be situated away from heat sources to prevent damage.
  • Power Sources: Operate the IR-X only from the type of power source indicated on the rating label. Power-supply cords should be routed to prevent pinching or damage.
  • Non-use Periods: Unplug the power cord from the outlet when the unit is left unused for extended periods.
  • Object and Liquid Entry: Care should be taken to prevent objects from falling into or liquids from spilling into the enclosure.
  • Ventilation: The cabinet's slots and openings are for ventilation and must not be blocked or covered to ensure reliable operation and prevent overheating.

Servicing and Repairs:

  • Qualified Personnel: Any service beyond what is described in the operating instructions should be referred to qualified service personnel. Users should not attempt to repair, modify, or service the Pre-Amp themselves due to high voltages that can cause serious injury or death. Unauthorized repairs will void the warranty.
  • Damage Requiring Service: The Pre-Amp should be serviced if the power-supply cord or plug is damaged, objects or liquid have entered the unit, it has been exposed to rain, it does not operate normally, exhibits a marked change in performance, has been dropped, or needs tube replacement.
  • Replacement Parts: When replacement parts are required, service technicians must use parts specified by the manufacturer or those with identical characteristics to avoid fire, electric shock, or other hazards.
  • Safety Check: After any service or repairs, a safety check should be performed to ensure the product is in proper operating condition.

Tube Replacement:

  • The IR-X uses two 12AX7 preamp tubes. While the manual does not detail user-level tube replacement steps, it states that "The Pre-Amp needs tube replacement" is a condition requiring service by qualified personnel, implying that tube replacement is not a user-serviceable task.

Firmware Updates:

  • The IR-X software automatically checks for device firmware updates via an internet connection. During a firmware update, it is crucial not to disconnect or power down the IR-X to prevent damage to the unit.
