Overview

This document is a Use & Care Manual for a Frigidaire dishwasher, providing comprehensive instructions for its operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description

The Frigidaire dishwasher is designed to clean soiled dishes by spraying a mixture of hot water and detergent against their surfaces. The cleaning process involves multiple steps: the dishwasher first fills with water to cover the filter area, then pumps water through the spray arms. Soil particles are directed across the filter and down the drain as water is pumped out. This series of steps is repeated as needed, with the number of water fills varying depending on the selected wash cycle. The dishwasher utilizes energy-efficient motors for both the wash and drain portions of the cycle. It is designed to operate on regular house current (120V, 60Hz) and requires a dedicated 15-ampere fuse or circuit breaker (20-ampere if connected with a food disposer). The DishSense™ Technology checks the soil level on dishes in POWER PLUS, NORMAL WASH, TOP RACK, and ENERGY SAVER cycles, automatically adjusting cycle parameters to ensure optimal cleaning while minimizing energy consumption.

Usage Features

The dishwasher offers a variety of wash cycles and options to accommodate different soil levels and dish types. Wash Cycles:

  • Power Plus: Recommended for heavily soiled pots, pans, casseroles, and dinnerware.
  • Normal Wash: Suitable for lightly to heavily soiled loads.
  • Quick Wash: Designed for lightly soiled loads only.
  • China Crystal: For delicate items like china, crystal, or other fragile dishware.
  • Top Rack: For small loads placed in the upper rack only, ranging from lightly to heavily soiled.
  • Energy Saver: Recommended for lightly soiled loads.
  • Rinse Only: For rinsing dishware that will be washed later.

Options:

  • Hi-Temp Wash: Heats water in the main wash to approximately 140°F (60°C) to enhance detergent effectiveness against food grease and soil, and to aid in drying. It is available on POWER PLUS, NORMAL WASH, and TOP RACK cycles, and automatically activated with POWER PLUS.
  • Heat Dry/Air Dry: HEAT DRY enhances drying, especially with rinse aid. AIR DRY deactivates the heater during drying, reducing energy use but potentially leaving dishes less dry.
  • Sahara Dry™: Extends drying time by approximately 20 minutes for improved drying performance. It can be combined with HI-TEMP WASH or SANITIZE for best results.
  • Sanitize: Raises the final rinse water temperature to 156°F (69°C) to sanitize dishes and glassware, meeting NSF requirements. This option is available in POWER PLUS, NORMAL WASH, and TOP RACK Cycles.
  • Delay Start: Allows users to delay the start of a cycle for 1-24 hours.
  • Favorite Cycle: Enables programming a preferred cycle and options into a single button for quick selection.
  • Child Lock Controls: Locks the dishwasher controls to prevent accidental changes or starts.

Loading Features:

  • Upper Rack: Designed for flexibility, accommodating cups, glasses, stemware, small plates, and bowls. Some models include a fold-down cup shelf/stemware holder for loading two levels of shorter items.
  • Adjustable Upper Rack: The upper rack can be raised or lowered to accommodate taller items.
  • Bowl Tines: Offer flexibility in the lower rack; they can be closed for saucers or small dishes, opened halfway for small casseroles, or fully opened for hard-to-fit items.
  • Lower Rack: Best for plates, saucers, bowls, and cookware. Large items should be placed along the edge to avoid blocking the spray arm. Fold-down tines in the lower rack provide space for extra-large items.
  • Silverware Basket: Can be loaded in the bottom rack or removed for loading on a counter. Some baskets have lids for securing small items like baby bottle caps. Sharp items should be loaded pointing down to prevent injury.

Operational Indicators:

  • Status Indicator Lights: Console lights provide information on cycle selection and current status. They remain on during operation and illuminate "Clean" and "Sanitized" (if selected and achieved) at cycle completion.
  • Status Window (on select models): Displays delay start hours, remaining cycle minutes, and "CLOSE DOOR" message.
  • Console Lights: Can be configured to remain on or turn off during cycle operation.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of the dishwasher.

  • Dish Preparation: Scrape away large food pieces before loading. Pre-rinsing or using the RINSE ONLY cycle is recommended for highly acidic or tomato-based food soils if the dishwasher won't be run immediately, to prevent discoloration.
  • Detergent Dispenser: Features two cups for detergent: a smaller one for pre-wash and a larger one for main wash. Only fresh automatic dishwashing detergent should be used.
  • Rinse Aid Dispenser: Automatically releases a measured amount of rinse aid during the last rinse to improve drying and reduce water spots. The dispenser holds enough for 35 to 140 washes, depending on the setting.
  • Glass Trap: Located in the center of the filter, it collects broken glass, straws, bones, and pits. It should be emptied regularly by rotating and lifting the spray arm and trap assembly.
  • Outer Door: Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid harsh cleaners.
  • Inside: The interior and filter are self-cleaning with normal use. The tub gasket area should be cleaned with a damp cloth if needed.
  • Overfill Protector: Located in the left front corner of the tub, it prevents overfilling. It should move freely and be cleaned occasionally with vinegar or bleach to dissolve buildup.
  • Drain Air Gap (if installed): Should be checked to ensure it is clean for proper drainage.
  • Winterizing: For dishwashers in unheated areas, electrical power and water supply should be disconnected, and water drained from the inlet valve and pump to prevent freezing.

Troubleshooting and Care:

  • Hard Water: Can cause lime deposit buildup, spots, or film. A water softener may be necessary for very hard water. Instructions are provided for removing spots and film using white vinegar.
  • Water Temperature: Hot water (at least 120°F/49°C) is crucial for best results. Users are advised to run the hot water faucet nearest the dishwasher before starting a cycle to clear cool water from pipes.
  • Water Pressure: The hot water line must provide water pressure between 20 and 120 psi for optimal performance.
  • Dishwasher Won't Run/Fill/Drain: Troubleshooting steps include checking circuit breakers, water supply, cycle settings, door latch, and ensuring the food disposer (if connected) is empty and the drain hose is not kinked.
  • Odor: Soiled dishes left too long can cause odors; using the Rinse Only cycle can help. A "new" smell after installation is normal.
  • Stains on Tub Interior: Tomato-based soils can cause pink/orange stains that fade over time. Pre-rinsing or using Rinse Only can reduce staining.
  • Opening Door During Cycle: If the door is opened, the START/CANCEL pad must be pressed, and the door shut immediately within 10 minutes to resume the cycle.
