Overview

The Futaba T16IZ SUPER is a sophisticated radio transmitter designed for remote control applications, offering advanced programming and update capabilities to ensure optimal performance and adaptability. This device allows users to easily update its programming online, incorporating new functions and improvements as they become available. The update process involves downloading update files from the Futaba website, transferring them to a microSD card, and then using the card to update the transmitter's software.

Function Description

The primary function of the Futaba T16IZ SUPER is to provide precise and reliable control over various remote-controlled models. It achieves this through its advanced programming capabilities, which can be enhanced and expanded via software updates. These updates can introduce new features, improve existing functionalities, and address any potential issues, ensuring the transmitter remains cutting-edge and compatible with evolving technologies. The device supports updates for its main program, as well as for connected receivers and gyros, making it a versatile control hub for complex systems.

Usage Features

The T16IZ SUPER is designed with user-friendliness in mind, particularly concerning its update procedures.

  • Online Updates: Users can easily download update files (typically in a zip format) from the official Futaba website. This ensures access to the latest software versions and enhancements.
  • MicroSD Card Integration: The update process relies on a microSD card. After downloading the update file, users extract it to create a "FUTABA" folder, which is then copied to the microSD card. This card acts as the medium for transferring the update to the transmitter.
  • Simple Update Initiation: To initiate a transmitter update, the user inserts the prepared microSD card into the SD card slot. Then, while pressing down the "HOME/EXIT" button, the transmitter is powered on. This action triggers the update screen on the LCD display, and the software update begins automatically.
  • Visual Feedback: During the update, the LCD display provides status messages such such as "Updating main program..." and "Updating resource data...". Upon successful completion, a "Completed" message is displayed, confirming the update.
  • Receiver and Gyro Updates: Beyond the main transmitter software, the T16IZ SUPER also facilitates updates for connected receivers and gyros. This is achieved by connecting the receiver or gyro to the S.I/F connector of the transmitter. The update files for these components are also downloaded from the Futaba website and transferred via the microSD card. Users navigate to the "System Menu" and then "Update" to select the specific product (receiver, servo, gyro, or sensor) to be updated. The screen will prompt the user to make the connected device ready for update and then tap the "Update" button. Progress is displayed, and a "Update succeeded" message confirms completion.
  • Battery Management for Updates: A crucial usage feature is the emphasis on battery status during updates. Users are advised to ensure the battery capacity is above 50% or to fully recharge it before initiating an update. This prevents update failures that could occur if the battery discharges mid-process.
  • Model Data Backup: While model data typically remains unchanged after an update, users are recommended to back up their model data as a precautionary measure before proceeding with any software update.
  • Error Handling and Recovery: The system provides clear error messages if an update fails (e.g., "Low battery," "Update file not found," "Broken file," "Write error"). In cases of a failed update, a recovery procedure is outlined: detach the battery, insert the microSD card with update files, then reattach the battery while pressing "HOME/EXIT" to restart the update.

Maintenance Features

The maintenance aspects of the T16IZ SUPER primarily revolve around ensuring the integrity of the update process and addressing potential issues.

  • Preventing Damage During Update: A critical maintenance instruction is to never remove the battery or the microSD card from the transmitter during an update. Doing so can lead to irreversible damage to the transmitter.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a "Possible Problems" section that details various error messages and their corresponding solutions. For instance, a "Low battery" error prompts the user to recharge the battery and retry the update. An "Update file not found" error suggests checking if all update files were correctly copied to the microSD card. A "Broken file" error indicates a corrupted or incorrect update file, possibly for a different transmitter. A "Write error" advises contacting a local service center for unknown reasons.
  • Service Center Contact: For persistent issues or errors that cannot be resolved through the provided troubleshooting steps, users are directed to contact their local service center, ensuring professional assistance for complex problems.
  • Firmware Version Tracking: The software update documentation includes version numbers (e.g., V2.1, V2.0, V1.2) and instructions on how to verify the installed version through the System Menu's "Information" button. This helps users confirm that the update has been successfully applied and to track the current software status of their device.
  • Specific Bug Fixes and Compatibility: Updates often include specific bug fixes, such as the "Bug fix for European T16IZ SUPER" in V2.1, which addresses communication instability under S-FHSS mode. They also introduce compatibility improvements, like GYA553 New firmware Version 3.x support in V1.2, ensuring the transmitter works seamlessly with newer accessories and functionalities.

In summary, the Futaba T16IZ SUPER is designed to be a robust and adaptable control system, with a strong emphasis on user-managed software updates that enhance its functionality and ensure its longevity in the dynamic field of remote control.
