T18SZ Model Data Converter
The T18SZ Model Data Converter is a software that converts model data of T18MZ or T14SG to
that for T18SZ. The software cannot convert model data that made by other transmitters such as
T14MZ etc. Thus please still use the existing converter - Futaba Model Data Converter Ver.1.0.4, if
you want to convert model data of T14MZ/FX-40/T12Z/T12FG/FX-30 on your T18SZ.
Prior to using the Model Data Converter software, please ensure that your transmitter is utilizing
the latest update for the respective transmitter (T18SZ V1.7~). Also, be sure to select the desired
conversion data in transmitter after it has been updated.
Important: Check the operation of the model prior to ight.

Overview

The Futaba T18SZ Model Data Converter is a software utility designed to facilitate the transfer and conversion of model data from older Futaba transmitters, specifically the T18MZ and T14SG, to the newer T18SZ transmitter. This tool ensures that users can upgrade their radio systems without losing their meticulously configured model settings, providing a seamless transition experience. The converter is a standalone application that runs on a personal computer, acting as an intermediary between the memory cards of the source and destination transmitters.

Function Description

The primary function of the T18SZ Model Data Converter is to take model data files saved on the SD cards of T18MZ or T14SG transmitters and transform them into a format compatible with the T18SZ. This conversion process is crucial because the internal data structures and hardware assignments can differ significantly between different transmitter models. The software handles these discrepancies, attempting to map existing settings to their T18SZ equivalents.

The conversion process begins by identifying the source transmitter type (T18MZ or T14SG) and then allowing the user to select specific model data files from the source memory card. Once selected, the software provides options for detailed settings, including the ability to modify condition names, dual rate names, and hardware assignments. This flexibility allows users to fine-tune the converted data to match the T18SZ's capabilities and their personal preferences. After these settings are confirmed, the software performs the data conversion and saves the new T18SZ-compatible model data to a designated location, typically an SD card intended for the T18SZ.

It's important to note that while the converter aims for comprehensive data transfer, certain settings may not be directly transferable or may require manual adjustment. For instance, telemetry settings, Box/Hysteresis settings, nested logic switches, and certain linear/VTR/Spline curves from the T18MZ are not converted. Similarly, when converting from T14SG data, specific functions like "VPP" are converted to "Auxiliary7," and "STICK ALARM" becomes "Throttle." Dual rate settings are also handled with specific conversion rules depending on their switch mode ("COND" or "SW"). The software also addresses differences in model types, converting THR CURVE and THR DELAY to Throttle AFR for AIRPLANE, GLIDER, or MULTICOPTER models. However, PIT CURVE for AIRPLANE models, Butterfly Adjust of AIL DIFF., Throttle limiter, FUEL MIX, User Menu, and 2nd Home screen settings are not converted. Fine tuning VR settings may also have different actual tuning ranges due to behavioral differences between the T14SG and T18SZ.

The converter also includes robust error handling, providing clear messages if issues arise during the selection, conversion, or saving process. These messages guide the user on how to resolve common problems, such as selecting an unsupported data type, using an invalid model name, or encountering issues with file paths.

Usage Features

Using the T18SZ Model Data Converter involves a straightforward, step-by-step process designed for user convenience.

  1. Preparation: Before starting, users must ensure a card reader is connected to their PC. The memory card from the source transmitter (T18MZ or T14SG) containing the model data to be converted should be inserted into the card reader. The same memory card can often be used to save the converted data for the T18SZ, streamlining the process. It is crucial that the T18SZ transmitter itself is updated to the latest firmware version (V1.7 or newer) to ensure compatibility with the converted data.

  2. Running the Software: The conversion process begins by launching the Model Data Converter executable on the PC.

  3. Selecting the Source Data: Users first select the type of the source transmitter (T18MZ or T14SG) from a dropdown menu. Then, they browse to the directory on the memory card where the model data is stored. The software will then display a list of saved model data, including the transmitter type, model name, model type, and date. Users select the specific model data they wish to convert from this list.

  4. Selecting the Destination Location: Next, users specify the intended location for the converted data, typically a folder on the SD card that will be inserted into the T18SZ. The software automatically suggests a model name based on the source data, but users have the option to enter a new, unique name for the converted model. This is particularly useful for organizing models on the T18SZ or if the original name contains characters not supported by the T18SZ (e.g., Japanese KANJI). Model names are limited to 8 characters for the T18SZ, and the software will prompt the user if the name exceeds this limit or contains unusable characters.

  5. Detailed Settings (Optional): The converter offers a "Detail" button that allows for advanced customization. Here, users can change "condition names," "dual rate names," and "hardware assignments." This feature is particularly useful for adapting settings to the T18SZ's specific hardware layout or for simplifying names. For example, condition names can be initialized to their original data names or abbreviated to an 8-character default (e.g., "CONDIT1"). The software also provides a "Substitute hardware function" that attempts to map hardware items from the source transmitter to available equivalents on the T18SZ if an exact match isn't present. However, certain switch and linear hardware substitutions are not possible, and their initial values will be set to NULL.

  6. Data Conversion: After all settings are confirmed, clicking the "Convert" button initiates the conversion process. Upon successful completion, a dialog box confirms that the data conversion was completed. In some cases, a warning dialog may appear, indicating differences in hardware or switch positions between the source and destination transmitters. Users are advised to read these warnings carefully and, crucially, to check the operation of the model on the T18SZ prior to actual flight.

Maintenance Features

The T18SZ Model Data Converter itself is a software utility, and its maintenance primarily revolves around ensuring its compatibility and proper functioning with the latest transmitter firmware.

  1. Software Updates: Futaba regularly releases updates for its transmitters and associated software tools. Users should periodically check the official Futaba website (e.g., futabarc.com/software-updates.html) for the latest version of the T18SZ Model Data Converter. Using an outdated converter with newer transmitter firmware or vice versa can lead to conversion errors or incompatible data. The software explicitly warns users if unsupported data is selected, advising them to update their transmitter or use a newer data converter.

  2. Firmware Compatibility: It is paramount that the T18SZ transmitter's firmware is updated to the latest version (V1.7 or newer) before attempting to use converted data. The converter's output is designed for specific firmware versions, and discrepancies can lead to unexpected behavior or data corruption on the transmitter.

  3. Data Backup: While not a direct maintenance feature of the converter, it is a critical practice for users. Always back up original model data from the T18MZ or T14SG transmitters before conversion. This ensures that if any issues arise during or after the conversion, the original, functional data is preserved.

  4. Post-Conversion Verification: The most important "maintenance" step after conversion is to thoroughly verify the converted model data on the T18SZ. This involves checking all settings, including condition names, dual rates, mixes, and especially hardware assignments, to ensure they function as expected. A ground test of the model with the converted data is highly recommended before any flight. This proactive approach helps identify and rectify any subtle discrepancies that might have occurred during the conversion process, preventing potential issues during flight.

  5. Error Message Interpretation: The converter's detailed error messages serve as a valuable maintenance aid. By understanding these messages, users can quickly diagnose and resolve problems, whether it's an issue with file paths, unsupported data, or invalid model names. This self-help capability reduces the need for external support and empowers users to maintain their data integrity.

In summary, the T18SZ Model Data Converter is an indispensable tool for Futaba users transitioning to the T18SZ, offering a structured approach to data migration with options for customization and robust error handling, all while emphasizing the importance of pre-flight verification and software updates for optimal performance and safety.
