The Greenworks 24V Lithium-Ion Cordless String Trimmer is a battery-powered tool designed for trimming grass and weeds, and can also function as an edger. It is intended for household use. The trimmer operates by rotating a monofilament cutting line at high speeds to cut vegetation.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Type: Cordless, battery-powered string trimmer/edger
  • Battery: 24 V Lithium-Ion (2Ah Li-Ion battery, model 31102828)
  • Speed: 8000 / 9000 RPM (no load)
  • Cutting Path: 10" / 12" (254mm / 305 mm) – adjustable
  • Line Diameter: 0.065" (1.65 mm)
  • Run Time: Approximately 40 minutes
  • Charger: Greenworks 24V Li-Ion charger (model 31101830)
  • Replacement Spool Model: 29632
  • Warranty: 4-year repair warranty for the product, 2-year warranty for the battery.

Usage Features

Assembly:

  • Guard Installation: A protective guard (model 34101719A) must be installed before operation. It is fastened to the trimmer head with a Phillips head screw and cannot be removed or disassembled after installation.
  • Auxiliary Handle: An auxiliary assist handle (model 34107727) can be positioned and tightened on the upper shaft for optimum control and balance. It is adjustable to a suitable position.
  • Shaft Connection: The lower shaft (model 33102727) inserts into the upper shaft (model 33101727) and is tightened by turning the shaft collar clockwise.
  • Battery Installation/Removal: The 24V Lithium-Ion battery pack slides into the handle and locks into place. To remove, the latch button on the battery pack is pressed down while pulling the battery pack out.

Operation:

  • Power On/Off: To start, press the safety lock out button and squeeze the trigger switch. Release the trigger switch to stop. The trimmer speed can be controlled by varying pressure on the trigger.
  • Edging Function: The trimmer head can be tilted 90 degrees by pushing the edge button until it locks into position, allowing the tool to be used for edging along patios, driveways, and walkways.
  • Cutting Width Adjustment: The cutting blade can be rotated 180° to change the cutting width from 10" to 12". A Phillips screwdriver is needed for this adjustment.
  • Line Advancement: The trimmer features Automatic Line Advancement. As the cutting line wears down, the trimmer automatically feeds additional line to the correct length. If the line does not advance, stopping and restarting the trimmer will cause it to advance 1/4" (6.4 mm).
  • Trimming Tips:
    • Ensure the protective guard is tightly installed and the battery is fully charged.
    • Trim only dry grass and weeds.
    • Maintain adequate lighting if trimming at night.
    • Hold the trimmer by both the switch handle and auxiliary handle for control.
    • Guide the trimmer in a semicircular motion, tipping the cutting head down at an angle.
    • For best results, guide the trimmer to the left.
    • Use only the tip of the cutting line, especially near walls and fences, to avoid overloading the motor and excessive line wear.
    • Avoid resting the trimmer spool on the ground.
    • For grass higher than 6" (15 cm), trim in small stages.
    • Feed extra cutting line before storing to prevent losing the line into the spool.

Battery Charging:

  • The battery is not fully charged upon purchase and should be fully charged before first use.
  • Plug the charger into an AC power outlet and insert the battery pack into the charger.
  • The charger has LED lights that indicate battery status:
    • Charging: Red
    • Fully Charged: Green
    • Battery Too Warm: Orange (remove for approx. 30 minutes to cool)
    • No Battery Present: Green
    • Defective Battery: Red (remove and replace)
  • Charging a fully discharged battery takes approximately 90 minutes.
  • The battery can be charged at any time as it will not develop a memory.
  • Store the battery pack fully charged.
  • If the battery is warm or hot when inserted, the charger LED may illuminate ORANGE; allow the battery to cool for about 30 minutes before charging.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Always remove the battery pack before adjusting, inspecting, or cleaning the trimmer to avoid injury, electric shock, or fire.
  • Cleaning: Brush or blow dust and debris out of air vents using compressed air or a vacuum. Keep vents free of obstructions. Wipe the housing and plastic components with a moist, soft cloth; do not use strong solvents or detergents.
  • Spool Replacement: A pre-installed monofilament cutting line spool (model 31105710) is included. To replace, disconnect from power, invert the trimmer, press tabs on the spool cover (model 3411546A-6) to remove it, then remove the old spool. Insert the new pre-wound spool, thread the line through the opening in the spool housing, align tabs, and push down to lock the cover. Pull the line while pressing the white line release button to advance it.
  • Spool Refilling: Cut 1/16" (1.65 mm) nylon monofilament line approximately 18' (5.5 m) long. Insert one end into the small hole on the spool to anchor it, then wind the line evenly and tightly in a clockwise direction, ensuring not to wind beyond the spool's edge. Insert the line through the hole in the spool housing before positioning the spool in the housing.

Battery Pack Maintenance:

  • Store the battery pack fully charged.
  • Remove the battery from the charger once the charging light turns green.
  • Do not store the battery pack on the tool or in the charger.
  • After charging, the battery pack can be stored in the charger if the charger is unplugged.

Charger Maintenance:

  • Keep the charger clean and clear of debris. Wipe with a dry cloth; do not use solvents or water.
  • Unplug the charger when no battery pack is in it.
  • Fully charge batteries before storage.
  • Do not recharge a fully charged battery pack, as overcharging shortens battery life.
  • Recharge the battery pack when power is low; do not allow it to become completely discharged.
  • Store the charger at normal room temperature (between 45°F and 104°F). If the battery pack is hot, allow it to cool before recharging.
  • Charger Mounting: The charger can be wall-mounted using two screws (not supplied). Drill two holes 2 3/8" (6 cm) on center. Use wood screws for wood studs or wall anchors and screws for drywall.

Environmental Safety:

  • Battery Disposal: Lithium batteries contain toxic and corrosive materials. Do not dispose of batteries in fire, open them, or mutilate them. Do not place them in regular household trash or incinerate them. Contact local waste disposal agencies for specific instructions and take them to a certified recycling or disposal center. Cover terminals with heavy-duty adhesive tape before disposal.
  • If battery leakage occurs, avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wash skin immediately with soap and water, then neutralize with lemon juice or vinegar. Flush eyes with clean water for at least 10 minutes and seek medical attention.
