Why GreenWorks GD40CS40 motor runs but chain won't cut or stops?

  If the motor of your GreenWorks Chainsaw runs, but the chain doesn't cut correctly, or the motor stops after around 3 seconds, it might be in protection mode. Release the trigger and start the machine again, avoiding forcing it to cut. Ensure the battery is fully charged. Lubricate the chain to decrease friction, and avoid operating the guide bar and chain without enough lubricant. If the battery storage temperature is incorrect, cool the battery pack to ambient temperature.

  If the motor runs and the chain rotates, but the chain does not cut, the chain might be blunt, so sharpen or replace it. Check that the chain is in the correct direction. Also, adjust the chain tension if it is too tight or too loose.

  If the motor of your GreenWorks Chainsaw runs but the chain does not rotate, the chain may be too tight, so adjust the chain tension. The guide bar and chain could be damaged, so replace them if necessary. If the motor is damaged: remove the battery pack, guide bar cover, bar, and saw chain; clean the machine; install the battery pack and operate the machine. If the sprocket rotates, the motor works properly; if not, call service center.

  If your GreenWorks Chainsaw doesn't start, ensure the chain brake is disengaged by pulling it towards you. Check that the battery release button clicks when the battery is installed. Charge the battery if the battery level is low. Also, make sure to push the lock-out button and the trigger simultaneously to start the chainsaw. If the battery is too hot or too cold, refer to the battery and charger manual.

  If the guide bar and chain on your GreenWorks Chainsaw are getting hot and releasing smoke, it could be due to several reasons. The chain may be too tight, so adjust the chain tension. The oil tank might be empty, so add lubricants. There could be a blockage of the discharge port, oil tank, guide bar, oil tank cap, sprocket, or guide wheels due to contamination, so clean these parts as necessary and add new lubricant.
