First, ensure that curtains, blinds, or furniture aren't blocking the front of the unit, as this restricts indoor airflow. Also, the temperature control might not be set correctly; try turning it to a higher number. A dirty air filter can also reduce cooling performance, so clean the filter at least every 30 days. If the room was initially very hot, allow time for it to cool down after turning on the air conditioner. Check for open furnace registers and cold air returns that may be allowing cold air to escape. Finally, iced-up cooling coils can also cause this issue.
