Overview

The H&S HT8 Tedder is an agricultural implement designed for spreading and fluffing hay to accelerate drying. This operator's manual provides comprehensive information for its safe operation, maintenance, and assembly.

Function Description:

The primary function of the H&S HT8 Tedder is to gently pick up and fluff hay, ensuring efficient drying. It is capable of tedding quickly and efficiently, with adjustments available to optimize its performance based on various conditions such as field conditions, weather, and the type and size of windrow or swath. The machine is designed to be towed by a tractor, utilizing its PTO (Power Take-Off) for power.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Maximum Transport Speed: The implement has a maximum transport speed of 32 km/h (20 m.p.h.). Exceeding this speed can lead to loss of control, reduced braking ability, tire failure, and damage to the implement's structure or components.
  • Tractor Compatibility: The manual emphasizes that the implement should not be towed if its fully loaded weight exceeds 1.5 times the weight of the tractor. It also explicitly states, "NEVER hook up 1000 RPM tractor to the Hay Tedder," indicating it is designed for 540 RPM PTO systems.
  • Hitch Pin Hole: The hitch pin hole for 540 RPM PTO is 14 inches from the end of the tractor power takeoff shaft. An improperly located hitch point can cause damage to the universal joints of the power takeoff.
  • Gear Box Oil: The gear box requires 80W-90W gear lube, and the oil level should be filled to the center of the shafts.
  • Wheel Bolt Torque: The lug nuts for attaching the wheels should be torqued to 95 ft./lbs.
  • Reel Tooth Bolt Torque: Reel tooth bolts should be re-torqued after the first 100 acres and checked periodically thereafter.
  • V-Belt Adjustment: V-belts should be adjusted to about 1/2 inch deflection, ensuring the reel runs parallel with the frame.

Usage Features:

  • Reel Cam Adjustment: The HT8 Tedder features an adjustment lever with eight different settings to regulate the height of hay pitching. This allows operators to fine-tune the tedder's performance for optimal efficiency under varying conditions.
  • Reel Height Adjustment: A height adjustment rod, located between the hitch and gearbox mount, controls the reel's height relative to the ground. Shortening the rod raises the reel, while lengthening it lowers it. A convenient handle is provided for easy adjustment.
  • PTO Holder: A bracket is provided to securely hold the PTO when the tedder is not in operation, preventing the reel from turning during road travel.
  • Reflectors: Front amber and rear red reflective decals are placed on the outer edges of the tedder to enhance safety during transport on public highways.
  • SMV Bracket: An SMV (Slow Moving Vehicle) bracket is provided for attaching an SMV sign, a crucial safety feature for highway travel.

Maintenance Features:

  • Lubrication: The manual details a comprehensive lubrication schedule and points. Grease fittings are located at:
    • (2) One at each end of the PTO at the U-joint (A)
    • One on the hitch adjustment rod (C)
    • One on the front jack shaft (sealed bearing) (D)
    • (2) One at each end of the reel main shaft (sealed bearing) (E)
    • (12) One at the end of each arm of each reel cross (F)
    • (12) Three on each set of cam arms (G)
    • One on the cam center bearing (H)
    • Greasing should be done daily during normal use, and before and after storage and power washing.
  • Wheel Bearing Maintenance: Wheel bearings should be greased as needed. Annually, they should be disassembled, cleaned with solvent, and repacked with high-grade grease. The nut should be tightened until a slight drag is felt when the wheel is turned, then backed off to insert the cotter pin into the first hole.
  • PTO Assembly Lubrication: The male and female driving elements of the PTO assembly must be kept well lubricated and free sliding to prevent excessive pressure and damage. However, the shield surfaces should be kept dry to avoid dirt accumulation and binding.
  • Gear Box Oil Check: Before initial use, the gear box oil level must be checked and filled to the center of the shafts with 80W-90W gear lube.
  • Fastener Torque: All bolts and fasteners should be checked for tightness during assembly and periodically thereafter. The manual includes a detailed cap screw torque values chart for SAE Grade 2, 5, and 8 fasteners, specifying both dry and lubed torque values.
  • Decal Maintenance: Operators are instructed not to remove any safety decals. If decals are lost, damaged, or if the tedder is repainted, they must be replaced to ensure continued safety information.
