Overview

The 475 Field Communicator is a portable device designed for configuring and troubleshooting HART and FOUNDATION fieldbus devices in the field. It utilizes Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL) technology, enabling communication with a wide variety of devices regardless of their manufacturer.

Function Description:

The device features a color LCD touch screen, a SH3 processor, memory components, and integrated communication and measurement circuitry. It supports both HART and FOUNDATION fieldbus protocols, allowing users to interact with and manage field devices. The communicator is designed for use in various environments, including hazardous areas, with specific models (KL option) being Intrinsically Safe (IS-approved) for Zone 0 (FM and CSA only), Zone 1, or Zone 2, for Group IIC, and Class I, Division 1 and Division 2, Groups A, B, C, and D locations. IS-approved communicators can connect to loops or segments attached to equipment in Zone 0, Zone 1, Zone 2, for Group IIC; Zone 20, Zone 21, Zone 22, and Class I, Division 1 and Division 2, Groups A, B, C, and D locations.

    • Flashing amber: Power supply/charger not connected to the communicator.
    • Flashing amber and red: Low battery charge.
    • Red: Charging cannot occur.
  • Connectivity: Three communication terminals are located on the top of the communicator for connecting to the loop, segment, or device. These terminals include red (positive) connections for each protocol and a shared black (common) terminal. An access door ensures only one pair of terminals is exposed at a time.
  • Startup and Shutdown: The device is started by pressing and holding the Power key until a green light blinks. Shutdown is initiated by pressing the Power key and selecting "Shut down" from the Power Switch screen.
  • PC Communication: The IrDA and Bluetooth interfaces, along with a card reader, allow the communicator or its System Card to communicate with a PC, facilitating data transfer and upgrades using the Easy Upgrade Utility.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Installation/Removal: The Li-Ion battery can be installed or removed by loosening two retaining screws and sliding it into or out of alignment with the communicator. It is crucial to align the battery properly to prevent damage to connector pins.
  • System Card Installation/Removal: The System Card is installed by sliding it into its socket until it clicks and removed by pushing it in to release it.
  • Cleaning: The exterior can be cleaned with a dry, lint-free towel or a towel dampened with a mild soap and water solution.
  • Screw Tightening: All exterior screws should be sufficiently tightened, with battery retaining screws hand-tightened to a maximum torque load of 0.5 Nm.
  • Terminal Maintenance: The communication terminal recess should be kept free of dirt and debris.
  • Authorized Service: Any maintenance, repair, or replacement of components not explicitly listed as user-performable must be carried out by specially trained personnel at an authorized service center. Attempting to open or modify the battery or power supply/charger, or using sharp instruments on the touch screen, will void the warranty and could cause personal harm.
