If you smell smoke in the house during operation of your Heatilator Indoor Fireplace, ensure the damper is fully open. If needed, clean the chimney. Use sufficient kindling and fuel. You may also need to open the glass doors or a window. Check if you need a balanced air make-up.

How to get a good fire going in my Heatilator EL42?
    • C
      carolinesloanAug 6, 2025
To get a good fire going in your Heatilator Indoor Fireplace, make sure the damper is open to ensure proper draft. Use more paper or starter to ignite the kindling. Use more dry kindling to ignite the fuel. Use well-seasoned small split wood. Arrange kindling and wood to allow for air movement. If you have an exposed, cold chimney, use a lighted rolled newspaper at the throat or flue opening to start upward movement. Also, check for obstructions in the chimney, pre-warm the chimney, shut off exhaust devices, and slightly open a window. Use more, drier, well-spaced kindling and fuel.

    • R
      richardsgregoryAug 13, 2025
If your Heatilator Indoor Fireplace burns wood too fast, consider adding glass doors to slow air intake. If the wood is extremely dry, mix in less seasoned wood after the fire is established.

How to get more heat from Heatilator EL42?
    • A
      Angela HarmonAug 18, 2025
To get more heat from your Heatilator Indoor Fireplace, make larger fires and burn seasoned wood that has been covered on top, split, and stacked for 9 months to 2 years. If you have a blower, wait until the fire is established and leave it on a lower speed. If one is available, add a blower.

What to do if I smell smoke after using my Heatilator EL42 Indoor Fireplace?
    • H
      Hannah BarnesAug 25, 2025
If you smell smoke in the house after using your Heatilator Indoor Fireplace, close the damper at the end of the burn. Check if you need glass doors, a balanced air make-up system, or a higher chimney. If the odor is from creosote, have the chimney cleaned. If the damper was closed too early, wait until the fire is completely out before closing it.
