The HEDD Type 05 MK2 and Type 07 MK2 are active studio monitors designed for precise audio reproduction. These monitors offer a rich feature set, including the ability to switch between closed and ported operating modes, and an integrated HEDD Lineariser® for phase correction. As active speakers, they come with an integrated amplifier, allowing connection to a digital interface or an analog pre-amplifier. The manual covers both models due to their similar nature, though illustrations may vary in color or size from the actual product.
Function Description:
The HEDD Type 05 MK2 and Type 07 MK2 monitors are high-end audio devices designed for professional studio use. They feature a HEDD Air Motion Transformer (AMT) for higher frequencies and a HEDD Honeycomb Woofer for lower frequencies, available in 5" or 7" depending on the model. The front-facing bass reflex ports can be used in either ported or closed mode with included plugs, offering flexibility in sound reproduction. The monitors are equipped with a rear-mounted MK2 Control Board for adjusting various settings, and XLR analog & AES digital input/passthrough connections. A power switch with integrated universal mains (85V - 264V at 50/60 Hz) ensures compatibility worldwide.
Usage Features:
- Getting Started: To begin, ensure the main power switch is in the "0" position, then connect the power cord. Switch to "1" to power up. The LED will turn green, and the monitors will be ready to play music after up to 15 seconds. It's recommended to lower the volume initially to prevent hearing damage. Audio sources can be connected via the balanced XLR socket, and the desired input (ANALOG / AES) can be selected using the rotary switch on the back. For digital AES input, you can choose left, right, or mono signals. For initial setup, it's advised to start with all control knobs in the "Up" position, which represents the factory setting.
- Status LED: The front LED indicates the monitor's operational status:
- Green Light: Power on.
- Red Light: Overload, indicating the input sensitivity should be decreased.
- White Light: Stand-by mode. The monitors automatically enter stand-by after 30 minutes of inactivity and wake up when audio is played.
- Speaker Setup: Proper speaker placement is crucial for optimal sound.
- Vertical Setup: The speakers are designed to be placed vertically on a solid surface or stand.
- Horizontal Setup: If placed horizontally in a stereo or surround setup, ensure symmetrical alignment, with tweeters facing either outwards or inwards to maintain a correct acoustical image.
- Height Positioning: Position the speaker so the tweeter is at ear height in your listening position. If not possible, tilt the speaker to aim the tweeter at your ears, avoiding muffled or less defined sound from tweeters placed too low or too high.
- Stereo Positioning: For stereo listening, place the two speakers and your listening position to form an equilateral triangle. Your listening position should be at the imaginary center point between the speakers. Adjust distances while listening to known records to achieve an authentic stereo panorama.
- Surround Positioning: For surround setups, place speakers in a circle around your listening position at specific angles: Center 0°, Front Right 30°, Rear Right 110°, Rear Left 250°, and Front Left 330°. The circle radius should be between 0.7m and 2m, and surrounding walls should be at least 40cm away to prevent early reflections. Using the same type of speaker for all channels (except the subwoofer) is preferred to avoid frequency/phase coloration.
- Stand/Wall Mounting (Type 05 MK2 only): The Type 05 MK2 has two M6 (6mm) screw threads on the rear for mounting, with a spacing of 60mm.
- CoP: Closed or Ported Mode: The HEDD Type 05 MK2 and Type 07 MK2 can operate in either closed or ported mode, offering different sound characteristics.
- Switching Modes: By default, speakers are "ported" (bass port open). To switch to "closed" mode, insert the included HEDD plugs into the bass ports using the HEDD screw (screw facing outwards). Push the plugs deep until resistance increases, then unwind and remove the screw. Finally, switch the knob on the back panel to "Closed" mode. Note that headroom in Closed Mode is limited, so lower the volume before switching. To revert to "Ported" mode, stop audio, wind the screw back into the plug, gently pull it out, and change the rotary switch to "Ported."
- Ported Mode: This is the default, allowing powerful low-end reproduction with higher efficiency and access to lower bass regions.
- Closed Mode: In this mode, the speaker functions as an infinite baffle, resulting in cleaner sound and increased resolution. However, it leads to a 6-10 dB reduction in maximum sound pressure level for low frequencies.
- HEDD Lineariser®: This feature provides complex phase-correction, addressing phase differences during multi-component sound reproduction. It ensures that all frequencies are "right in time," improving transients and imaging. By default, it's turned on. Note that it introduces a latency of around 12 ms, so it can be switched off for live recordings or instrument playing to avoid delay.
- Control Settings:
- Volume: The rotary switch adjusts reproduction level in a ±12 dB range. Fine-tuning volume through the connected source (interface, control board, mixing board, or pre-amp) is recommended. The default setting is 0 dB.
- Shelving Filter:
- Low Shelf: Adjusts frequencies between 30 Hz and ~200 Hz in a ±4 dB range (1 dB steps). Useful for compensating boosted bass response when speakers are near walls or in corners, or for balancing sound in bright rooms.
- High Shelf: Adjusts frequencies between 3 kHz and ~20 kHz in a ±4 dB range (1 dB steps).
- Low Frequency Range: The default low frequency range can be extended by ~20%. For Type 05 MK2, the -3dB point shifts from 45 Hz to 36 Hz; for Type 07 MK2, it shifts from 38 Hz to 30 Hz. If using the monitors with HEDD BASS series subwoofers, set the switch to "for SUB." If using a BASS 08 or larger subwoofer, it's preferable to use the analog outputs from the sub, as HEDD BASS subwoofers also have a Lineariser® (introducing ~30 ms delay) for a linear phase Satellite-Sub-system. A "Sat. offset" rotary switch allows compensation for listening distance variations between subwoofer and MK2 monitor (2m in .5m steps). If feeding a full-range signal to both satellites and any subwoofer in parallel, set the switch to "for SUB."
- Input Selection: A 4-position rotary switch selects the input signal. "Analog" uses an analog signal from a symmetrical source. The other three positions refer to an incoming digital AES signal (Left, Right, or Mono). For multi-channel audio beyond stereo (e.g., 5.1 surround), monitors must be fed via the analog XLR input.
- Input Sensitivity: This rotary switch levels the analog input voltage to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio for the A/D converter. Gain can be added up to +4 dB for weak signals or reduced by -4 or -10 dB for very loud signals (>2 V) to prevent A/D converter overload. This setting does not affect digital AES input.
- Desk Filter: A 3-position PEQ (Parametric Equaliser) minimizes early reflections from desk surfaces that can blur sound. Settings are: Small (up to 80 x 150 cm [d x w]), Med. (up to 100 x 180 cm [d x w]), and Large (for larger consoles or desktops). The optimal setting depends on the acoustical environment.
- Troubleshooting: The manual provides solutions for common issues like no audio output (check wiring, input selection, signal path, thermal protection), hum/buzz noise (disconnect signal cables, check equipment, move RFI-producing devices), constant red overload LED (reduce input audio level), and varying output volume (use GAIN control). If problems persist, contact HEDD Audio support.
