WARNING:

Precaution!
The Powder Coating paint process has become the most
common widely used application in the outdoor furniture
category. Unfortunately powder coating is extremely
sensitive to Humidity and Moisture. A simple process to
protect your furniture, especially flat surfaces is to apply a
simple coat of
good quality car wax prior to using. If this
process is done every few months it will protect your
furniture for years to come.

Questions and Answers

Overview

This document describes the Hiland Premium Series Outdoor Fire Pit Table, Model # F-1108-FPT, a gas-fired outdoor infrared patio heater designed for residential use. The manual provides comprehensive instructions for assembly, operation, and maintenance, emphasizing safety precautions throughout.

Function Description

The Hiland Outdoor Fire Pit Table serves as an outdoor heating appliance, utilizing propane gas to produce a flame for warmth and ambiance. It is designed to be used exclusively outdoors, providing a decorative and functional centerpiece for patios or other open-air spaces. The unit is equipped with a burner that produces a flame, and the heat output can be adjusted. A removable burner cover allows the fire pit to be covered when not in use, protecting the burner and glass beads. The design incorporates a housing for a standard 20 lb. propane cylinder, which fuels the appliance.

Usage Features

The fire pit table is designed for ease of use with several key operational features:

  • Propane Fuel System: It operates on a standard 20 lb. propane cylinder (sold separately) with a vapor withdrawal supply system. The cylinder connects to the fire pit via a hose and regulator assembly, which is supplied with the appliance.
  • Ignition System: The unit features a gas control knob that allows users to turn the gas supply ON/OFF and adjust the flame intensity. To light the fire pit, the control knob is pushed in and turned counterclockwise to the "IGNITE" position. A clicking sound indicates the ignition process. For initial starts or after a cylinder change, the control knob should be held in for 2 minutes to purge air from the gas lines.
  • Adjustable Heat Output: Once lit, the flame can be adjusted from "HIGH" to "LOW" by pushing in and turning the control knob. This allows users to control the heat output according to their preference.
  • Safety Shut-Off: To extinguish the burner, the control knob is depressed and turned clockwise to "OFF." The propane cylinder valve should also be turned OFF when the heater is not in use.
  • Outdoor Use Only: The fire pit is strictly for outdoor use and must not be operated inside buildings, garages, or any other enclosed areas to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and fire hazards. Adequate fresh air ventilation is crucial.
  • Clearances: Specific clearances from combustible materials are required: at least 24 inches from the sides and rear, and 6 feet from the ceiling. The fire pit should be placed on a hard and level surface, away from windows, air intake openings, sprinklers, and other water sources.
  • Glass Beads: The burner area is filled with glass beads, which enhance the aesthetic appeal of the flame.
  • Burner Cover: A removable burner cover is provided to protect the burner and glass beads when the fire pit is not in use or after use.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and safe operation of the fire pit table:

  • Exterior Cleaning: Exterior surfaces should be cleaned with warm soapy water. Flammable or corrosive cleaning agents should never be used. The manual also suggests applying a good quality car wax to the exterior surfaces every few months to protect the finish, especially flat surfaces, from humidity and moisture. This is particularly important for powder-coated surfaces, which are sensitive to these elements.
  • Burner Area Maintenance: The area around the burner must be kept dry at all times. The control valve assembly should never be submerged in water; if it is, it must be replaced.
  • Airflow and Ventilation: It is imperative to keep the control compartment, burners, and circulating air passageways clean and free from obstructions. The ventilation opening(s) of the cylinder enclosure must also be kept clear from debris. Signs of possible blockage include gas odor with extreme yellow tipping of flame, the fire pit not reaching the desired temperature, excessively uneven glow, or popping noises.
  • Burner Cleaning: Spiders and insects can nest in burner orifices, creating a dangerous condition. Burner holes should be cleaned using a heavy-duty pipe cleaner, and compressed air can help clear smaller particles. Carbon deposits, if they develop, should be cleaned with warm soapy water to prevent fire hazards.
  • Hose Assembly Inspection: The hose assembly should be inspected before each use for evidence of excessive abrasion, cuts, or wear. Suspected areas should be leak tested. If the hose leaks, it must be replaced with a manufacturer-specified replacement.
  • Burner Inspection: The burner itself should be inspected before use. If it is damaged, it must be replaced with a manufacturer-specified replacement before the appliance is put into operation.
  • Annual Inspection: The fire pit should be inspected at least annually by a qualified service person. More frequent cleaning may be required as necessary.
  • Leak Testing: A leak test must be performed outdoors before initial use, after any gas connections are loosened or removed, and whenever a new propane cylinder is connected. This involves applying a soapy water solution to connections and checking for bubbles.
  • Storage: When not in use, the control knob should be turned OFF, and the LP source disconnected. The fire pit should be stored upright in a well-ventilated area, sheltered from direct contact with inclement weather. If storing indoors, the propane cylinder must be disconnected and stored outdoors, out of reach of children, and in a well-ventilated area. The cylinder should never be exposed to direct sunlight or excessive heat. A dust cap should be placed on the cylinder valve outlet when not in use.
  • Service: Only a qualified service person should repair gas passages and associated components. The fire pit must be allowed to cool completely before attempting any service.
