Function Description

The Holms 300 is engineered for efficient sweeping, particularly against kerbs and other irregularities. Its core function involves a rotating brush roller that picks up refuse into an integrated container. The brush roller is driven by two direct-acting hydraulic motors, which are available in two sizes: 2000 (195 cm³) and 4000 (311 cm³). These motors are designed to operate within specific hydraulic oil flow ranges, ensuring optimal performance.

A key design feature is the suspension of the sweeper brush, which ensures constant and uniformly distributed contact pressure to the surface being swept. This design minimizes brush wear and enhances the roller's ability to handle surface irregularities like tram tracks and kerbs effectively. The refuse container has an effective volume ranging from 360 to 700 liters, depending on the chosen width of the sweeper.

The standard model of the Holms 300 includes a 400-liter water tank and an electric water pump for dust suppression via a sprinkler system. The machine's attachment hooks are of the screw type, allowing for lateral displacement and simplifying the process of switching between different carrier vehicles.

Optional extra equipment includes one or two side brushes, which can be fitted on the right, left, or both sides to improve sweeping efficiency, especially in areas with kerbs.

The hydraulic motors are available in two sizes:

2000 (195 cm³) for a flow of between 40 and 130 litres/min.
4000 (311 cm³) for a flow of between 70 and 210 litres/min.

Usage Features

Connection to Carrier: The sweeper connects to the carrier by tilting the machine attachment forward, connecting the hook part, lifting, and tilting back. This process is crucial to prevent damage to the loader arms. Quick-couplings for the drive hoses connect to the carrier's third function hydraulic outlet or hydraulic motor circuit. It is critical to ensure these couplings are clean to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. An electric cable for the water pump also connects to the carrier.

Operator Settings: Operators must set the vertical position and tilt of the machine, adjust the height indicator to compensate for brush wear, and set the ground pressure.

Vertical Position and Tilt: The sweeper is lifted, supports are raised, and the brush roller is started. The sweeper is tilted until the tilt indicator's yellow markings align. It is then slowly lowered until the height indicator's yellow markings align (for a new brush).
Height Indicator Adjustment: This is performed before long working periods. The machine is lowered until there is a 10-15 cm gap between the refuse container and the ground. The set screw on the height indicator is loosened, and the indicator is moved until the yellow markings align.
Ground Pressure Setting: Adjusted using two screws. The carrier's lifting or tilt function should not be used for this. The sweeper roller is allowed to rotate against the ground, and the width of the swept strip (normally approx. 10 cm) is measured. Ground pressure is reduced by tightening the spring (screwing in adjusting screws) and increased by releasing the spring (unscrewing adjusting screws). An even ground pressure can be checked by placing scales under each support, aiming for 30-50 kg per side with the container approx. 15 cm above the ground.

Emptying the Refuse Container: The machine is lifted and tilted backward to empty the refuse. Care must be taken to ensure the machine's bar tube does not jam against the loader arms. Rotating the roller a few turns helps free rubbish.

Disconnection from Carrier: Supports are lowered and secured in the parking position to prevent brush deformation. Hydraulic quick-couplings and electric cables are released. Attachment lock pins are released, and the attachment is tilted forward to place the machine on the ground, preventing damage from loader arms.

Side Brush Operation (Extra Equipment): The side brush control unit attaches to the driver's seat with magnets and plugs into a 12/24 volt socket.

Setting the Side Brush: Sideways inclination is adjusted by loosening two nuts, angling the brush, and re-tightening. Forwards inclination is adjusted by loosening the lock on the rigging screw, fixing it, and securing it. Brush pressure against the ground is adjusted by loosening a nut and screw, pushing down the rod for increased pressure or pulling it up for decreased pressure. The brushing pattern should show only the forward, outer part touching the ground.
Operation: The main brush (roller) must be rotating. The side brush starts and moves into the operating position by moving a switch to position 2 on the control unit. The number of turns can be adjusted with a wheel on the flow control valve. To stop, move the switch to position 1 and hold it until the brush stops and lifts. The side brush must always be in its upper, locked position during transport and emptying.

Sprinkler System: The electric water pump should not run dry. The system has two water filters (one in the tank filling hole, one on the pump's suction side) that must be in place when filling to prevent damage. Both filters are reusable and can be flushed clean. In freezing conditions, the water tank, pump, filters, and hoses must be drained. The tank's suction pipe is designed to end slightly above the bottom, leaving rough particles in the container. A bottom plug must be removed to empty the tank.

Maintenance Features

After Operation:

Washing: Wash the sweeper to increase its service life and aid in detecting leaks or faults.
Inspection: Inspect hoses, brush guards, springs, and the machine body for damage, and check for oil leakage.

Brush Replacement:

Removing the Brush Roller: Raise supports, lower the container to the ground. Undo hydraulic hose attachments on the bar tube. Remove four fixing screws at the end. Prevent the bar tube from flying up by holding your foot on the support plate and carefully lifting away the end. Remove the roller from the motor at the other end. Lift the machine and remove the roller.
Replacing the Brush: Undo screws and remove clamping rings. Insert a shackle into two holes for fixing screws in one end of the brush core and feed a lifting loop through. Lift the brush roller on its end using an overhead crane. Lift the roller slightly and remove brush and spacer rings from the brush core. Check the core for damage. Attach one clamping ring to the brush core. Lift the brush core with the clamping ring downwards. Fit a brush with its pins in the grooves on the brush core, then fit a spacer ring. Alternate brush rings and spacer rings, ensuring brush rings face 'in opposite directions'. A thinner spacer ring or double brushes may be needed at the end for correct length. Fit the second clamping ring.
Fitting the Brush Roller: Lift the machine and roll in the brush. Lower the machine. Push the brush roller onto the motor at the fixed end. Raise the end onto the two guide pins using the hydraulic motor and carrier, holding down the bar tube with your foot. Fit the four fixing screws on the end, ensuring no brush hairs are trapped. Fit hydraulic hose attachments on the bar tube.

Replacement of Brush on Side Brush (Extra Equipment): Unscrew the five nuts a few turns and slowly twist the brush loose. When fitting a new brush, pass the nuts up through the plate and twist clockwise for right-side fitting or anticlockwise for left-side fitting.

Replacement of the Swish Brush: The Swish brush uses a cassette system, so the brush core does not need to be dismantled.

Loosen the catch.
Turn the outer stop to the open position.
Pull out spent cassettes.
Rotate the roller to extract all cassettes.
Slide in new brush cassettes.
Rotate the roller to insert all cassettes.
Lock the catch.
Turn the outer stop to its locked position. Lubricating the tracks with soap or similar will simplify brush replacement.

General Safety and Maintenance:

Always use dust covers for quick-couplings when disconnected to prevent dirt in the hydraulic system.
Ensure all warning labels are legible and understood. Replace if illegible or missing.
Always read and understand the instruction manual before use or maintenance.
Ensure the carrier is suitable for the machine's hydraulic oil flow, stability, and weight.
Do not make unapproved modifications or use non-approved spare parts, as this voids the warranty and may lead to injury or damage.
Always specify machine type and serial number when ordering spare parts or contacting Holms.
Use approved lifting devices only when transporting or lifting the tool.
Park on supports to avoid brush damage during storage.
