6. ELECTRICA L
Silicon Rectifier
Inspection
The condition of the silicon rectifier is tested
by disconnecting the electrical connections
and testing the rectifying function in both
the normal and reverse directions. Continuity
in the normal direction only indicates good
condition. Continuity in both direction indi-
cates a defective rectifier.
Note:
1. Do not use a megger for the test as the
high voltage will dama ge the silicon
diodes.
2. Obser ve the polarity of the batter y. Con-
nectin g the batter y termi nals in rever se
will shorten the lif e of the battery as well
as causing a large current to flow through
the electrica l syst em, cau sing damage to
the silicon rectifier, and al so destroyin g
the wire harne ss.
3. Do not operate the generator at a high
RPM with the "P" termina l (red/whit e
cord from the magneti c swit ch) of t he
silicon rectifier disconnected. The high
voltage generated may dama ge the silicon
rectifier.
4. When charging the battery mounted on the
motorc ycle fro m an external source wit h
high charge rate such as a "quick charge",
the wiri ng to the silicon rectifier should be
disconne cted at the coupler to prevent
damage .
