About this guide
This document provides information about:
Identifying ACM-VLX, VLX, EXP, and AXM components
Installing and wiring an ACM-VLX, VLX, EXPs, and AXM in the field
Connecting and configuring the ACM-VLX or VLX for network
connectivity and I/O operation
Maintaining and monitoring ACM-VLX or VLX during operation
How to use this guide
First check Table 1 on page 5 for other documentation you might need,
depending upon your level of expertise and job focus. For example, even
experienced programmers will need the BACtalk Programmers Guide and
Reference (LTBT-TM-PRGRMR) for DDC information.
Even if you are an expert with Alerton and Compass systems, review “About the
ACM-VLX, VLX, EXPs, and AXMs” on page 20. The ACM-VLX/VLX/EXP/
AXM combo is a new breed, and this section gives you important information
about new features and how to apply the ACM-VLX and VLX.
“Key illustrations” on page 6 is a good starting point for installation technicians
and engineers. Browse through either or both of these sections to become
familiar with the hardware and the ACM-VLX’s/VLX’s unique new installation
requirements. If a component, feature, or step is not familiar, follow the cross-
reference to more detailed information.
Appendices at the back of the manual provide quick references and worksheets
useful to programmers and system developers.
Setting up the ACM-VLX or the VLX is a four-step process. Each step builds on
the previous one, so this manual is organized in the order of these steps:
1. Install the hardware.
2. Connect with HyperTerminal for configuration.
3. Connect an operator workstation for configuration and checkout.
4. Set up programming, automation, and integration with a solid
understanding of ACM-VLX or VLX data.
After you review installation information, check “VLX/ACM-VLX/EXP/AXM
operation and maintenance” on page 64 for information about running tests and
verifying operation.
