Getting Started 35
TOP prompt in the equation catalog. Use the × and Ø keys
to move through the catalog until “2*2 and 3*3 lin solve” is dis-
played.
Figure 32
An example of a 2 by 2 linear system might be 3 X + Y = 10
and X – 2 Y = 8, which has the solution set {X = 4, Y = – 2}.
This example contains six coefficients, 3, 1, and 10 for the first
equation in the system, and 1, –2, and 8 for the second equa-
tion. A 3 by 3 system contains a total of twelve coefficients.
Not every system of linear equations has a solution. Some sys-
tems have an infinite number of solutions. The linear solver
equations built into the HP 35s detects situations where no solu-
tion exists, or where an infinite number of solutions exist.
To solve the 2 by 2 linear system presented above, make sure
the “2*2 lin. solve” entry in the equation catalog is on the bot-
tom line of the display, using the × and Ø keys, if neces-
sary.
