to
prepare

columnize
the
file:
Eliminate
all
carriage
returns
(*)
except
those
between
records.
Decide
how
many
data
items
you
want
to
include
with each
record.
Use
the
following:
Last
name,
first
name,
area
code,
phone
number,
address,
city,
state,
zip
code, birthdate.
Each
record
will
have
nine
items
and
thus,
you
will
have
nine
“columns”
in
the
file.
Eliminate
any
commas
that
you
don’t
want
to
see
in
the
spreadsheet
—such
as
the
one
between
last
and
first
names
and
the
one
between
city
and
state.
Using
spaces
only,
adjust
each
data
item
so
that
it
lines
up
with
the
corresponding
data
items
in
the
other
records.
All
last
names
should
line
up
under
each
other,
all
first
names
should
line
up
under
each
other,
and
so
forth.
When
you've
finished,
the
file
should
look
something
like
this:

1
J,
Notice
that the
small
size
of
the
HP
95LX
screen
causes
you
to
make
some
mental
adjustments
when
it
comes
to
aligning
“columns.”
Each
record
wraps
into
three
lines.
The
first
line
has
four
columns,
the
second
has
three
and
the
last
one
has
two
columns.
The
consistency
of
columnized
text
can
be
seen
in
the
fact
that
the
city,
for
example,
is
always
in
the
second
column
of
the
second
line
of
each
record
(and
these
columns
line
up
with each
other).
It
doesn’t
really
matter
that
there
are
other
intervening
lines
in
the
display
because,
in
terms
of
data items
and
records,
they're
not
really
“in
the
way.”
