Overview

The HP D6000 Disk Enclosure is a high-density, low-cost external storage solution designed for HP BladeSystem and selected ProLiant Gen8 servers. It addresses the challenge of growing unstructured data by offering a scalable and cost-effective direct-attached storage option without compromising flexibility or performance.

Function Description:

The D6000 functions as a direct-attached storage enclosure, providing high-capacity storage for servers. It supports up to seventy (70) 3.5" Large Form Factor (LFF) Universal hot-pluggable SAS or SAS (Midline) MDL drives within a 5U rackmount form factor. This allows for significant storage density, with two pull-out drive drawers each accommodating 35 hot-pluggable drives.

For BladeSystem servers, the D6000 connects via 6 Gb/s SAS front-end connectivity using 6 Gb/s SAS BL switches in the interconnect bays and HP Smart Array P721m or P731m controllers in each BladeSystem server. It's crucial that the Blade switch firmware is 3.0.8.0 or higher for D6000 support.

For ProLiant Gen8 servers, the D6000 can be directly connected using Smart Array P421 and P822 Controllers with a standard 2M SAS cable. The P822 controller supports Dual Domain environments, while both P421 and P822 support Single Domain. The D6000 also supports HP H221 and H222 Host Bus Adapters (HBAs).

A key feature is its ability to support up to six D6000 storage devices off a single BladeSystem enclosure, providing up to 1260 TB of capacity. The 6 Gb/s host connectivity ensures higher performance, simplifies configuration and deployment, and broadens supported features when used with HP Smart Array P721m or P731m controllers and 6 Gb/s SAS BL switches.

Usage Features:

  • High Density: Accommodates 70 LFF drives in just 5U of rack space, maximizing storage within a compact footprint.
  • Easy Configuration: Storage can be configured "on the fly" using easy-to-use management software.
  • Zoned Direct Attach Storage: D6000 drive bays can be assigned or 'zoned' to individual blade bays using SAS 2.0 zoning capabilities. The Virtual SAS Manager (VSM) in the 6 Gb/s SAS BL switch allows dynamic assignment of up to 100 drives to specific BladeSystem servers without complex configuration or re-cabling. This makes the zoned drives appear as local storage to each server, offering complete flexibility for quick and easy reconfiguration.
  • Scalability: A single BladeSystem enclosure can support up to six D6000s externally. Capacity can be quickly deployed and expanded by configuring additional drive bays to Smart Array Controllers without moving cables.
  • Dual Domain Environment: An optional kit with two dual-port I/O modules can be added for SAS drives, creating a dual domain environment, which enhances reliability and performance.
  • Management Tools:
    • Virtual SAS Manager (VSM): For BladeSystem servers, dynamically assigns D6000 drive bays to BladeSystem server bays, simplifying configuration.
    • Array Configuration Utility (ACU): For Smart Array Controllers, provides configuration and management of hard drives, supporting online array capacity expansion, logical drive extension, assignment of online spares, and RAID or stripe size migration.
    • HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM): For active hardware management, allowing array management, firmware updates via Smart Components, and recording events in an Integrated Management Log.

Maintenance Features:

  • Redundant Components: Each pull-out drive drawer is supported by redundant hot-plug power supplies and redundant hot-plug fans, ensuring high availability and continuous operation even in case of component failure.
  • Fault Tolerance: Smart Array Controllers enable support for various RAID levels (0, 1, 1+0, 5, 6, 50, 60, 1 ADM) to protect against drive failures and ensure data availability.
  • Upgradeable Firmware: The D6000 supports offline firmware upgrades, allowing for easy maintenance and updates to improve functionality and address potential issues.
  • Warranty: The D6000 enclosure comes with a 3-0-0 warranty (three-year parts exchange, next business day delivery). SAS hard drive options have a three-year warranty, while SAS Midline (MDL) hard drive options have a one-year warranty.
  • Care Pack Services: HP offers various Care Pack services for extended coverage, faster response times (e.g., same-day 4-hour response or 6-hour Call To Repair), and longer duration (1, 3, 4, or 5 years), including proactive support options like HP Proactive Care 24x7 and HP Support Plus 24.
  • Remote Support Automation: HP Automation provides 24x7 coverage, proactive problem prevention, accurate problem diagnosis, and faster problem resolution through interactive support portals and tools.
