HP FastRAID
Accessory Kit
To enhance the performance of the 16-bit Wide Ultra SCSI channel, HP
FastRAID has been introduced as an option. HP FastRAID increases data
read/write speeds to the hard disk drives by read/write caching and disk
striping. Models with the HP FastRAID Accessory Kit have an Adaptec®
ARO-1130 PCI RAIDport adapter installed in the RAIDport connector slot.
The ARO-1130 adapter is supplied with 16 MB SIMM installed in the adapter
memory slot. If the adapter must be replaced, do not remove the SIMM
because the replacement adapter will be supplied with its own SIMM. In
addition, no reconfiguration of the FastRAID I/O subsystem is necessary
following the replacement of the ARO-1130 adapter, as all information
concerning the FastRAID configuration is stored on the hard disk drive(s).
Please refer to page 9 for information concerning the FastRAID
configuration when adding or replacing hard disk drives.
The ARO-1130 adapter and hard drive(s) come preconfigured for maximum
performance (RAID 0) but may also be configured to provide protection
against data loss (RAID 1).
The RAID 1 configuration provides software mirroring and caching. Data is
mirrored (duplicated) using a disk pair. If one disk fails, the data is still
available on the mirrored drive. The RAID 1 configuration also provides an
improvement in performance using the cache on the ARO-1130 adapter. It
does not, however, provide the same level of throughput as the RAID 0
(default) configuration. Also, because data is mirrored, the storage capacity
of the hard drives is only half the physical capacity of the drives.
All HP Kayak XU PC Workstation models contain the FastRAID port, and
so allow for post-purchase installation of the HP FastRAID Accessory Kit. It
should be noted that use of the ARO-1130 adapter with a single drive will
still increase performance due to the read/write caching feature built into
the ARO-1130 adapter.
